hah, check this out:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6318034/Could-the-Large-Hadron-Collider-be-held-back-by-its-own-future.html
The pair's hypothesis centres around the Higgs Boson, a mysterious tiny particle and building block of life that it is hoped the LHC will discover.
They have come up with a theory that it will "ripple backward through time" and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

If their theory was correct, would it not have rippled back in time and killed them too?

Higgs boson is sneaksy!

The "Many world's" theory which is getting a greater sense of acceptability neuters the Grandfather paradox.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

I think this depends on how you conceive time.

1.- If there is already a time line with a start and a finish. 2.- If the line is being "created" and "erased" as we travel trough it.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

One could perceive time be a wave function that actually yields a plethora of multiple outcomes and the present is just one of these outcomes in a given dimension.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

just watched a few episodes on this last night and I seriously doubt that with the amount of researchers (10k) over the span of 15 years would miss something as big as a black hole or time travel. All they are trying to do is replicate (on a very small scale) the effects of the big bang. The higgs won't even be viewable as it's very unstable and will start producing mass as soon as it is created. What they are trying to view are the particles that it creates.

All of this is trying to prove / disprove string theory / the theory of everything to help us understand why we are here, how we were created along side help us understand how life was created.

Big theories surrounded in a lot of controversy. interesting story for sure. Good job Einstein.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

I agree with the comment that their intention behind the experiment is to view the effects of the universe few fractions of a second after the bid-bang but they are simultaneously hopeful of discovering a few other tidbits as an unexpected byproduct of such a collision, the Boson Higgs particle being a primary suspect.

Though I would love to hear more about this comment of your's
The higgs won't even be viewable as it's very unstable and will start producing mass as soon as it is created. What they are trying to view are the particles that it creates.
While I am no where near an expert on the subject, this is the first time I've ever read a plausible explanation for the elusiveness for the Boson Higgs particle (if it exists at all).

Here is a simulation of what might happen during the creation of a Higgs Boson. What we are actually looking at are the many particles an unstable Higgs would create... aka the byproducts of the collision. With the Higgs being so unstable and so heavy (compared to protons) that it would start creating mass immediately.

If you are bored at work, this article makes for a good read and explains the Higgs in detail.

while i'm not expert on the subject either, I am highly fascinated with the subject and love reading about it. :)

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

from the few videos that I saw on youtube about Higgs Boson particles, its not that they are heavier particles and start producing mass as soon as they are created, they are in fact interacting with other heavy particles passing through the Higgs field and when the Higgs Boson particles collide/merge with these particles, a new particle is formed that creates mass.

while running around youtube, I also saw a channel called cerntv that's releasing monthly updates on the status of the accelerator and apparently, the final installation of the magnet is nearly complete and they have been running tests with particles inside the largest of the inner rings, just a flick of a switch away from the LHC. the future isn't soon enough.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

yea I've seen that one a few times, but hopefully what Cern discovers is way more earth shattering. Perhaps time-travel and many worlds theory has been such that if discoveries from LHC resulted in time-travel and they did go back into the past to somehow change it, then that past resulted in a different future unlike ours, which is why we don't know about it yet and at the same time, we haven't been visited by time travelers from the future.

ignorant lhc application might correspond with cancer in the microcosm. over, or under stimulation may lead to unnatural growth, peril, disruption, and ruin. apply wise discrimination and caution while utilizing this device.

Re: Large Hadron Collider being sabotaged by the future?

Maybe they'll get a collision this time?

What happens if they find their particle the first time they use it? What do they do with it?

Personally I think they should straighten it out and stick it in space (http://www.springerlink.com/content/72p1v5677563926x/)
