Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

I am trying to back up a large file onto an external Hardrive attached by usb.

it states not enough room on disc. But clicking properties suggests its only half full.

Is there a way to determine if its corrupt? or what its real fullness maybe? is this a bad sign?

thanks!

Re: Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

How large is your file, and what file format is your external hdd in?

FAT32 has a 4gb limit on file size, NTFS doesn't.

And if your file size is more than 4gb, that's probably your problem.

Is that if one file is larger than 4 gb it wont copy or a collection of files?

one file apparently, as I have already done many smaller files at one time succesfully.

Re: Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

Yup, singular 4gb file or larger, FAT32 cannot handle. It is a limitation in the file format for whatever reason, nothing we can do about it. Huggie have you confirmed that's causing your problem?

Re: Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

in as muchas the file is bigger than 4, it is a fat system and i can transfer smaller files - so it defo explains it. I appreciate the info.

Re: Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

Digger, you wont be able to join em since the max file size is 4gb.

Can you format the external drive on NTFS? Then you could put the files in it.

Re: Determine if external HD is full/corrupt?

For example dual layer dvds that are like 8gigs arent just one big file, they are plenty of small ones. So there are no problems reading it ;)
