Q: Why the PS3?

A: In short, the Cell Processor ‘packs a punch’. One of the authors (Khanna) estimates that his MPI computations run much faster than on desktop workstation chipsets, and that his original 8 PS3 (i.e. 64 core) Cell cluster had comparable if not better performance to a 200 Node IBM Blue Gene system.
Pretty sweet. All of these GPU based clusters are pretty kick ass. Since they are made to straight up crunch numbers they are a great cheap way to get a ton of processor power.

Re: Build your own PS3 supercomputer

Yup. This allows you to turn your PS3 into a computer that you can also link with other PS3's and basically crunch a crapload of data. This is like having a very expensive supercomputer at your fingertips, so if you are a scientist or whatnot you can analyze a lot of data relatively cheaply.

You can link up ps3's by default cant you? You need to install linux and go through a lot of steps to do that....but it seems very interesting....have you tried it res0?

Re: Build your own PS3 supercomputer

im sure you can connect your ps3 thru whatever sonys equivilant of xbox live is, but not to crunch numbers, just for playing online games. i dont have a ps3, but i work on a pretty big 256 node / 1024 cpu cluster at work so i think this stuff is interesting...
