my old broadband receiver was usb/ethernet but isp recently changed it to ethernet so i had to get ethernet card for desk-top. bought one and installed as per instructions but no joy.

the card's led lights up as if to say data reaching it (connection fine when in laptop so no problem there) but i get limited or no connectivity error.. in device manager all seems well - the card is in there and no errors or driver issues so i began to suspect card. if i unplug cable i get "a network cable is unplugged" message so something is communicating somewhere?? a friend lent me another card which he knew to be good (different make and model altogether) and it behaves exactly the same as the first.. have gone as far as my limited pc knowledge has let me now and wondered if anyone could offer any assistance of any kind .. thanks in advance :crash:

Is the network card set to a static ip address? Sometimes it may get set to a 0.0.0.0 address and needs to be set to back to obtain an ip address automatically.

go to control panel> network connections > right click local area connection> properties> select internet protocol and click properties. This should be set to obtain an ip address automatically and obtain dns server automatically selected unless the bb provider has told you otherwise.

Do you have a wireless router in your setup? If yes, then when you have limited connectivity like that, it means your router has successfully setup your internal network but it is not able to connect to your cable modem and connect to the internet. the way to check this would be to login to the routers control panel and see if it is obtaning an IP address from the modem, if it is, then just unplug your modem for 30 seconds and then reboot it. Also, do you have cable or DSL? generally you will need a username and password for your DSL connection. Lastly, if you connect via ethernet to the router, the router's MAC address will need to be registered with the ISP (at least we have to do that here). Call them and double check that. You can find the MAC address of the router at the bottom of the router.

If you don't have a router, then just turn off the Modem for 1 minute and reboot it. Also, the MAC address principle is applicable for the network card too. if you click start, run and type in CMD, it should give you a command prompt. At the prompt, type in "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and it should display Physical Address of the network card, which is the MAC Address. Give that to tech support and they should be able to get you back online asap.

Remember, if you are using a router, give them the MAC address of the router. If you are using only 1 PC connected directly to the cable modem, give them the MAC address of the network card.

cheers dr fez - i just tried it again but no joy if i de select internet protocol (tcp/ip) in lan properties then the connection icon says it is connected but as soon as i select that box again it goes back to "no connectivity" - either way still no net

nothing is wireless and no router involved - just straight in via ethernet from receiver...

again i just put cable into laptop and no trouble i don't know what dsl is so dunno about that one? thanks for your help

so essentially what is happening is your cable modem/receiver has the laptops mac address registered to it but not the desktops. If you want both to connect, you will need a wireless router or some sort of router to be able to share the internet connection at home.

if i could get the desktop online i don't care too much about the laptop - the laptop has just been a temporary solution as it had an ethernet port already the next thing i'm gonna try is tying the pc to the back of my car and going for a drive to the coast

phoned isp they said they not seeing an ip address at all though so faulty card (which i don't think) or error somewhere in windows his advice was to re-install windows but the chances of me findin disc are nil i know

sure he's right because there were 2 components in the protocol properties that asked for disk to enable - hmm shit

thanks though - better support here than the place i fuckin pay every month

as for the software asking for install discs, its probably asking for drivers of the network card. try that.

Try releasing your ip on the laptop and once you do it turn off your modem....then turn it back on plug it on your desktop and renew your ip on the desktop....not sure it will help you though....

Thanks kass - tried that last night but still no joy

In control panel / network , if i right click on LAN to enable the connection , it looks as if it worksand even gives the message that it is connected..... but only v briefly (couple of seconds) before the old yellow triangle returns. this is still the same after releasing / renewing ip as per kassios' suggestion........

The isp tech man was saying there was no ip visible for the network card (not modem) - also when doing an "ipconfig" in dos nothing at all shows as an ip address - he said that would be a row of zeros if install was ok but b'band not reaching card so i'm not sure there...

As for the modem, yeah all lights present and correct and all is behaving as it should and again, if i swap the ethernet cable back to the laptop it works straight away in there.....

In the "network connections // properties" box the problem i feel is somewhere in or around the internet protocol (tcp/ip) option. I say that without knowing what it is or what it truly does but once that is checked the error comes on -

In the laptop i am on now i go in that same page and something called "network monitor driver" is installed as a protocol and is the only thing i can see that is there but not installed in the desk-top so i click install (desktop) and it asks for the disk for the drivers again.. I'm trying to find a driver on the network card disk (as kamal suggested) that might be the one it's after but no joy as yet....

I'm supposed to be doing my accounts and tax return so it's not going well - not to worry.....

i'm sorry if my explainations aren't so clear to those of you that know about this kind of thing - and thanks again for taking the time to help me out - really appreciate it..

I think you will need the a windows xp disk to install the network monitor driver. Does the laptop have an ip address in the internet protocol when you connect that up?

without that disc - not bein pessimistic or anything but i'm not gonna find it - is there any other way? could i download drivers? could i borrow someone else's xp cd or does it have to be mine? cheers people
