Now that our beloved smartFtp has gone into the yonder world of becoming a pay and use only program, I have discovered another free FTP program that works JUST as good for what I need to do, is FAST although lacks the finesse of smartftp.

Give CoreFTP a shout, pretty good and like all good things in life (including [ms] ;) ) its FREE

Re: FTP Program

I still don't know what an FTP is....... What is it? I know that it stands for file transfer protocall, and a way of uploading, downloading, and/or sharing files, but how does it work?

#1098890Post 6 of 35

Re: FTP Program

yes, its a way to connect to a server on a designated port that is intended to upload / download files to a server.

Re: FTP Program

Like rapidshare?

#1098900Post 8 of 35

Re: FTP Program

it transfers files using a certain protocol.. pretty simple stuff

if you had an external HD, its the same as moving files from one HD to another except these are remote drives

its arguably quicker to download via ftp than it is via http (through your browser by clicking on a link) but its not that much quicker where you're going to really miss it. Its more convenient in terms of being able to upload files to a server (since you can always download through your browser)

Re: FTP Program

the ftp speed is like downloading anything, it's dependant on the your broadband speed and of where you are getting the file from.. the stuff I grab from 365mag ftp downloads a lot faster than stuff I download from some "other places"

Re: FTP Program

...And it's free?? Sorry to ask a shit load of questions, just trying to weigh up some options..

#1099057Post 21 of 35

Re: FTP Program

there are a lot of ftp programmes that are free yeah.. first one I ever used was cuteFTP, not sure if that one is free any more.. they are really easy to use, I'm surprised you've never used an ftp client before

options as far as what?

if you've never needed a FTP program until today, probably won't have any reason to use it either. it's not a soulseek or bittorrent type thing, but is only used for uploading/downloading to servers that you have access to. if you don't have an account on an FTP server somewhere, or know of any places that offer music via FTP (I don't) then you probably aren't going to get from this what you're thinking

I have friends that have music pools on ftp's....Just wasn't sure if it would be worth it to join..

Remember the days where the whole action went on in closed groups using private FTP's built like the Fight club (there is no FTP) before the nerds took over with their 0 day releases of everything via Rapidshare and Co?
