just got my macbook pro. Since they cost an arm and a leg, I thought I'd try Apple certified refurbished - supposedly fixed, heavily inspected, comes with same warranty as a new macbook.

Well, I finally get it in the mail and everything is great..... except that the sound in one speaker is fucked.

so now since I'm living in Wichita, KS for the next 5 months, there is no Apple store anywhere near here and I have to ship the goddamn thing off somewhere....god knows if I'll ever see any functional piece of mac hardware prior to new years.

fucking macs...PCs, here I come!

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

Ever heard the phrase "You get what you pay for" when it comes to computers I would never buy refurbs. But they will fix the speaker and then you'll have a computer that is way better than a Win model.

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

yeah I guess refurbs will always have a higher probability of defects, seeing as that's why they were refurbs in the first place - but these are certified by apple and supposed to be thoroughly inspected by them. They come with the same guarantee as new computers, less about $400. But oh well, I know there is always some probability in such a big process of getting the bug... I'll give em a chance. I got a case number from tech support and I'm taking it to a local certified apple reseller to be dealt with for free...

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

hey as long as you get the warranty, you shouldn't have to worry. it's only an inconvenience to not being able to use it for a few days.

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

am i the only person alive to never have a PC issue. the only computer issue i had was when i spilt a beer on my keyboard.

seriously, as long as you keep your AVG/anti virus updating weekly, and run the occasional defrag and cleanup, it should be fine.

funny thing is, my roomates mac camera broke and he lost his comp for 3 weeks while it was fixed. i changed out my keyboard in the half hour it took me to drive to bestbuy and buy a new one.

plus, as emuler said, go to newegg or similar and build a monster. i did it with alienware, and my PC is a beast. i upgraded my vid card once. want to do it again. thats only cuz of the evolution of graphic cards and my need to play games in the highest quality. (notably wow, EQ2 and teamfortress.) for the price you pay for a good mac laptop, you can get a more powerful PC tower. Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

I don't have PC issues either but then I build my rigs with the parts that I want. I'm not a fan of pre-built systems because you can't get everything tailored to your likes and needs.

As for the comments about refurbished units, it depends on why it is labeled a refurb. I bought a 17" NEC LCD monitor for my daughter years ago and it was a refurb because the manufacturer forgot to include the manual in the box. Therefore, it had to have the manual added and could no longer be considered new. Because of that, I got $100 off of the price.

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

My PC's have always run brilliantly. Think the first one I ever built wasn't the best of things (AMD Duron 800mhz, VIA chipset that wasn't great, Windows ME (Ugh!)) but since then learnt how to choose the best parts and keep XP running smoothly and quickly.

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

i'm sure a lot of the problems come from all the third party software that HP SONY IBM and whomever else puts on the computers.

DIY FTW  I never had any problems with my PCs either. In fact XP was my favourite Windows, it was the most robust and stable of the lot. When there was a crash, the system always booted up fine like nothing happened. I don't even need to stick in the install cd and go into repair mode. And I only run NOD32 and some auto-defrag software for the system and nothing else.

Let's face it, 90% of the problems with any OS is user errors. The rest is hardware failure. A lot of computer users simply have no concept of working with a computer or workflow or file naming or updating their OS, etc. And they relentlessly click on anything that can be clicked on, including dumb MSN worms sent out by infected friends.

But Apple still makes better notebooks than most PC makers, maybe with the exception of Sony.

dell laptops imho best customer care around :)

had couple problems with some of them at work, they came to the office, switched the part, the very next day.

had problems with a compaq, it took me a month to fix it, and had to ship it

my desktop computer was built with parts i chose, and works great. never had a single problem

nice.

i love the look and feel of Linux so much. Fedora is so awesome... the only problem is that installing and uninstalling software that doesnt have a ready-made package is just way too tiresome for me. :(

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

yeah that usually takes some time and hacking...ubuntu has about 25,000 packages supplied with it which usually covers alot of standard software you might need.
But Apple still makes better notebooks than most PC makers, maybe with the exception of Sony.
As I've said it before, Apple makes their hardware to run their software so they obviously get it when it comes to that. Microsoft forces people to make the hardware to run to their software. Laptops is an area I have never been happy with because one can't build a laptop from scratch without jumping through hoops. I would love to be able to build a 24" widescreen laptop and I mean build the laptop.

yes their customer support is good but the laptops feel so cheap.

my work just bought a dell vostro for travel and it just feels so damn cheaply made imho.

if i were forced to get a windows notebook, it would be a sony or a toshiba.

#1090457Post 28 of 47

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

didnt mean it that way, its just that they have to fix 95% of the shit they sell. therefore a million people say they have good service. a company like alienware has to fix maybe 1-2% of thier machines. i was so iffy about going with them as the prices are deffo above average, but god damn, one time i has an install issue cuz i accidentally stopped its weekly upgrade downloads, and they just remote accessed me and BAM done. 5 years old and still runs like the day i got it. and like i said b4, the only issue i have is that my vid card is 5 years old and needs to be upgraded.

we've got over 50 dell laptops at work.

most of them Inspiron 6400, don´t look cheap at all. well built, nice parts, and of all 50 laptops, only had problems with 3, all of them were solved in less than 48hs.

the XPS series is amazing

and the new Latitude series is way better imho

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

One thing that is still driving me crazy, is why the hell is the ctrl key or the option key, whatever one it is represented by that freaking crazy symbol and not just a capitol C or CTRL? that is annoying as shit.

#1090614Post 35 of 47

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Option_key

The Option key in a Mac operating system functions differently from the Alt key under other Unix-like systems or Microsoft Windows. Most notably, it is not used to access menus or hotkeys, but is instead used as a modifier for other command codes, and also to provide easier access to various accents and symbols. Apple commonly uses the symbol ⌥ (U+2325, 8997 in decimal) to represent the option key. This symbol represents a microswitch, allowing the current to go one of two directions. From 1980 to 1984, this key was known as the closed apple key, and had a black line drawing of a filled-in apple on it. (See command key for information about the history and the "open apple".)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Command_key

The Command key has a single purpose: allowing the user to enter keyboard shortcut commands to GUI applications. The Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines have always recommended that developers use the Command key (and not the Control or Option keys) for this purpose. A small set of shortcuts (such as cut and paste, open and save) are standard across all applications, and many other shortcuts are standardized (Find, Show Fonts). If an application needs more shortcuts than can be obtained with the twenty-six letters of the Latin alphabet, double modifiers such as Command+Option are used. One advantage of this scheme, as contrasted with the Microsoft Windows mixed use of the Control and Alt keys, is that the Control key is reserved entirely for its original purpose: entering control characters in terminal applications. (Indeed, the very first Macintosh lacked a Control key; it was soon added to allow compatible terminal software.) The Macintosh keyboard's other unusual modifier key, the Option key, serves as a modifier both for entering keyboard shortcuts and for typing text—it is used to enter foreign characters, typographical symbols, and other nonstandard characters.

You're right, I only switched to a laptop this year because I could never get over the fact that you can't DIY a laptop. But because of my move, I decided a laptop would serve me better for my travels.

Re: so much for macs...back to PCs

....and an update:

so Apple tech support got me in touch with a local authorized repair place to fix the right speaker. They supposedly repaired it and gave it back to me today. I brought it home and tried it out.

It's doing the exact same goddamn thing as before.

Now I'm calling Apple to return it and getting my money back. They can have their goddamn computer. I just don't have the patience or time to keep dicking around like this. Not worth the money I saved.

Moral of the story: DON'T BUY REFURBS, EVEN FROM APPLE!!! fucking POS...
