Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
Always those jerks coming to our site advertising their business without contributing anything to our site......
Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
Definatly go for another psu like an OCZ Powerstream 520, those Antec's are so much overrated.
Or Tagan, Sparkle and Topower make v good psu's too.
Don't beleive in the Antec marketing hype
And please Intel ?? you got to be kidding me Amd is where it's at performance/power consumption wise.
Edit 2.8C 512K cpu's aren't available in 775 socket, so you will get a 1mb cache chip which is slower and gets a lot hotter, do you want it to act as a space heater ? :WinkNSmi:
AMD will be getting its chance on the forum too.... stay tuned ... links to be posted shortly ......
little typo on the CPU, copied and pasted the wrong one.... updated....

Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
Why are you using a budget CPU on a gaming PC? Waste money insted!
Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
I still like my Commodore 64...think I can trade it in?

ummm that budget CPU can be overclocked MORE than your 3.2 / 3.4 / 3.6 ghz box.... more value for money...

But if money is no object, as the title suggests, why not buy the top processor, like an extreme edition or whatever, and overclock to 5Ghz, with twice the cache size. Value for money is different from the best that money can buy... :p
that is an excellent debatable issue, most overclockers like to do it as a hobby, not an obsession, you could pick up a liquid nitrogen cooling kit and O/C the thing to 5 ghz right ?? right.... but shit like that is NOT commerically available through online vendors and not very easy to get a hold of.
Assembling it and making sure it works is another nightmare altogether.... in the post, I did state that this this PC is built from parts parts currently / publicly available so that would exclude custom built extreme cooling options...
the PC I built was more for everyday + gaming use, rather than build the most powerful PC from a pentium IV chip....
but I like your arguement, it made me step back and think about my statement too ;)

Can these speeds be achieved with regular air cooling?
That system is pretty similar to what Maximum PC put in the Dream Machine this year. Biggest difference is the CPU. They got a 3.6GHz Prescott up to 3.97GHz without liquid cooling, which I thought was amazing.
Personally I would have gone with Logitechs instead of Klipschs. That's about the only thing I would have changed though. Is the video PCI-Express? And yes, that Asus is the best motherboard money can buy. Built in Wi-Fi, 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports, Firewire II and 3 RAID controllers. Worth every penny.

Hell yeah Zen...really nice system. I'm an Intel guy and I would consider that setup in a heartbeat. You right about the 6800GTs...best price to performance ratio maybe ever. My brother just got one and I'm getting one in a week or so.I saw those Seagates on NewEgg too. You can't beat those for the price. I'm seeing at least one in my near future.
I would try to come up with a system but -e- pretty much summed it up for me. The only thing I could do was jack the price up another $1000 by adding niceties like an Extreme Edition, A PC Power and Cooling PSU and a liquid cooling case. Not much else left.
better pinch your duckets bitches

Yes you can O/C the Intel chips on air, never debated that... I have a 3.2 thats running at 3.5 (was previously at 3.72 but because Far Cry was acting like a bitch I had to drop it).
The reason I went with a cheaper CPU is because you can bump a 2.8 to nearly 3.5 on air.... and so the the extent that the 2.8 can be O'Ced is way more than a 3.5 / 3.6 can, hence I went with the 2.8

that Lian Li is a lovely case.
Are you a Rich geek?? Do you have $6,500+ to throw into the ultimate machine?? Perhaps you want it a new server to host your upcoming Half-Life 2 server escapades??
Look no further then the badest of all badass machines:

Yeah, I got you. I wasn't trying to debunk your claim...just wondering. Any idea what it is about the 2.8s that makes them so overclocking friendly? I've heard the EE are next to useless in that area. I was thinking the extra cache would cause the core to heat up too much when it reached a certain temp, but I'm not really sure.
Is your 3.2 a Prescott? My brother is trying to finalize his new system and is having a hard time decieding on a CPU. Everything I've read or heard about Prescotts said they are not worth a damn at 3.2. Their 30 stage pipeline is just too much to keep going at that speed.
Maybe that's why you've got it at 3.5. Maybe I just answered my own question. Either way...what fan\heatsink are you using?

Just don't expect it to be able to compete with the Opteron's my friend. AMD has a sound lead in that department. :P
So, in reference to the intel setup, you'd buy a PCI Express motherboard and an AGP video card ?????
I think the money is the problem!
Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
No PC. I use game only PS2 or X-BOX
Re: The best gaming PC money can buy ??
Ok, you guys definitely know your computers and sounds like you'll create your own. But, what's the best gaming pc to buy for those of us less educated and don't want to know that much? I only care for gaming, internet browsing, and music.
For example, what's the best video card right now? What's better AMD chip or Intel? And should I go buy a Dell XPS or Alienware computer?

It all depends on so many variables. Most importantly to start, what is your budget for this PC?
Best video card is another variable. See there is the absolute best of the best, which would be the nVidia 6800 Ultra Extreme, but you can't find it around right now because the very few of them in existence, are owned already. Next best would be arguably the 6800 Ultra, with the ATI varient very close behind. But yet again, that ATi varient is pretty much non-existent. Then there is the 6800 GT which comes with exactly the same configuration as the 6800 Ultra, but underclocked a bit. Which is easily enough tweaked.
If your budget is high, I'd say go with the Dell XPS out of the two you mentioned, but your still going to spend a lot more to get the same thing built for you by a local machine builder in town. Which is what I recomend for anyone in your shoes. They will warrenty their work, and every part on your machine will have a vendor warranty of 3 years.
Just tell me your budget, and someone can give you the specs you will want in order to fall into that price range. You can take all of those specs to a system builder in your city and away you go.
also it will help if you can continue this conversation on MercuryEngine....
thanks
