I was wondering if anyone knows of the good brands. I am looking to get a 1 terabyte hard drive and was looking at the LaCie, western digital. Or if somone could recommend a brand. The reasons for me getting one are obvious just to store all my music. Thanks guys/gals :D

Re: External Hard Drive

You could buy any 1TB harddisk and put them in an external enclosure? That should cost less.

NEVER BUY LACIE....

Re: External Hard Drive

I've seen massive amounts of Lacie hard drives in operating rooms and heard nothing but good things from IT people. What gives?

Re: External Hard Drive

Those external hard drives you see are basically your typical 3.5" internal drives that you find in your computers. All you need is an external enclosure similar to this with either a USB or Firewire connection. The difference is when you purchase a complete drive from makers like LaCie, it usually comes with some one-button backup function that you might or might not use.

Re: External Hard Drive

not to hijack the thread, but does anyone know of any other portable external drives that are bus-powered, like a WD Passport (i.e., that don't require an external power source)? Looking for something 250 MB or bigger. Might just go the Passport route, but I'm not even aware if there are other options. TIA.

Re: External Hard Drive

I know staples had a 320 Gig Maxtor (bus powered) I saw around Christmas time for about $90. Not sure the deal is still running.

We have had over 70 of them fail in the past 2 years... and their customer service bites it too.

Re: External Hard Drive

I've got a WD pasport. 2.5" 80GB version and I just hook it up via USB to the laptop and it works like a charm. Small, light-weight and doesn't get hot. You can always get a 1.8" flash drive and an enclosure for it. You can find those at places online like Newegg.

From what I know, only 2.5" notebook drives can be bus-powered, anything bigger, ie. your 3.5" internal drives, need an external power source. I use a 2.5" 80GB for portability, and a 3.5" 250GB for home.

Re: External Hard Drive

I have been using Maxtor and Seagate. Personally I like Maxtor because of their 800 Firewire bus and daisy chain option. I have been very lucky with externals. I currently have over 8 external drives and I use them strictly for back up. I buy them in pairs. I have two copies of everything.

Just be careful when you go with higher gigs. They tend to have a higher failure rate.

Re: External Hard Drive

You can get a FireWire800 enclosure for any hard drive. Don't be stuck with just Maxtor. C'mon now.

Re: External Hard Drive

Time is money. I do not have time to go back and forth to Fry's. ;)

#954612Post 18 of 30

Re: External Hard Drive

Why would you buy an enclosure from Fry's? They have the worst prices for enclosures.

Re: External Hard Drive

Re: External Hard Drive

i've got a 320Gb Western Digital jobbie!

works a treat, but a bit on the bulky side and it needs to be plugged into the wall for juice.

apparently u can get selfed power 320gb drives now that are a lot smaller.

#1011625Post 21 of 30

Re: External Hard Drive

Yes. The 2.5" laptop drives can just be plugged into your system and won't need additional power.

#1011777Post 22 of 30

Re: External Hard Drive

i am thinking either get a Western one or Maxtor. Which is a better name and model. i don't care bout plugging it into the wall as long as by plugging it into the wall it won't heat up more.

Re: External Hard Drive

WD have been producing decent hdds recently, I'd go with them. The Maxtor external hdd is a fugly brick anyway, I know, it's sitting right next to my notebook right now. Good thing it isn't mine, just dumping gigs of music into it for my friend.

Re: External Hard Drive

rip it out and put it in your own case then

Re: External Hard Drive

Just bought the WD 500 gig one. Copying some files onto it now. Since this is my first one is there anything i should be careful of ? EG not moving too many files at one time or anything else. Thanks guy's its nice and compact. and no noise (so far anyway). 8)

Re: External Hard Drive

oh and i got it for $189 Australian dollars. which i think is quiet cheap. I thought it would cost me like $300-400. so thats nice to know how cheap they are. once this is packed full which won't take long will get another one. depends if it gives me trouble or not.

#1012285Post 28 of 30

Re: External Hard Drive

You are good to go with it. If at some point you want to connect it to a Mac, then the drive has to be formatted in FAT32 (which it should be by default).
