I'm thinking of getting the following parts from Newegg.com and wanted to list them here before I make the plunge.

All together it comes out to 900 dollars minus 70 dollars in rebates for a grand total of $830

I have a Samsung 27 inch lcd display that I'm currently using, another 120 gig wd hd that is currently in my computer and a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse.

I want to run windows vista on this new system and this will be the first system that I've ever built.

Is there anything that I'm overlooking? All in all what do you guys think of this system. Any comments or suggestions? Also is there any other websites where I may find these parts for cheaper.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

Being your 1st pc build I believe it's a good one. But if I were you, I would have gone for a 8800gtx instead of a 8600. The 8600gts is not a really powerfull GPU if you are planning to play demanding games. From the other hand, if you are not that obsessed with pc gaming then the 8600 is a good choice. Regarding the price, I'm afraid I can't help you since I don't usually buy from the net. But as far as I'm concerned, newegg is a nice place to buy from!

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

I would also recommend going quad core. If you're not going try and be an uber-overclocker with just a couple of bumps in your CPU cycles, that 8MB L2 cache on the Quad core is going to give you twice the performance boost over the regular 4MB cache on the Core 2 duos.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

If you plan on doing the dual core and do plan to ever OC, you can get the E6400 for much cheaper and it'll OC way better since it has a better multiplier. I know that 6750 goes for around $150. I didn't get a chance to open your links and look at the prices.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

I'm with beaner on that, the 6400 (or the better overclockable E6600 that has gained near legendary status for OCing) will easily take you from 2.4 ghz to 3.4 with minimal add ons for fighting heat. It won the product of the month for 2 straight months on newegg. iirc

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

Newegg.com is not a bad place to shop from but I don't agree with their pricing. It's a shame you don't have Fry's Electronics near you or that monarchcomputer.com is no longer with us. They always had better prices and great service. Do you have any electronics/pc shops near you that may offer better pricing than what Newegg has?

not quite yet kamal, http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000942.html

but i agree with u, go for the quad core, software will catch up especially with the dawn of 8 cores sometime in 2008

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

you answered it right there. I mean how quickly have we gone from 2 to 4 cores. The PC will remain with him long enough (at least the mb + cpu) to the point where 4 core exploitation could start happening within next year alone. you can always add more and more RAM in the future.

I'm sitting on the shitty Northwood architecture 3.2 ghz P4 for the last 4 years and its been keeping my living room toasty

At least you don't have to buy a heater for the winter season.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

So here is the final system that I went with;

Motherboard: ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6750 - Retail

Memory: OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2P800R22GK - Retail

Video Card:XFX PVT80GGHF4 GeForce 8800GTS 320MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported HDCP Video Card - Retail

Power Supply: 650 W Cooler Master Power Supply

Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

Case: COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail

Disk Drive : SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B - OEM

Additional Fan : ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan - Retai

I went with the 8800 GTS graphics card and a bigger power supply in the end in case i went with SLI in the future. I didn't go with the quad core and a GTX card due to price, but I have the ability to upgrade to those items if needed. I'm happy with the overall build. Installed Vista 32 bit business with no problems so far. Thanks for all of you comments and suggestions. Overall price after rebates should be about 900 dollars. Not to bad imo.

Nice one! Now do some serious overclocking and go for crysis demo :)

Looks awesome you might check out the review for this graphics card http://www.gamespot.com/features/6181908/index.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=multimodule&tag=multimodule;picks;img;9

Looks like a sweet deal for a good brand name.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

Too bad you don't live in the states or you could get that same graphics card for around $170.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

For $250 the 8800gt was rated great

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together

I was testing the 8800gt card at work (www.velocitymicro.com) and this card is so close to a gtx and from what I have seen it is only between $250 and $400. No more bam bam money, hello waste of money for sli.

Re: System I'm thinking of putting together
For $250 the 8800gt was rated great
That card is supposed to be at a price point of $219 but supply and demand is getting the better of it. Now ATI has two cards that are cheaper and are much better than the 8600GT and although not as good as the 8800GT, still impressive for being budget cards.
