My wife, who hates video games with a passion, has decided that she loves the Wii and has to have one. Far be it for me to complain. Not the edgiest games in the world, but I played one at a bar a week or so ago, and I have to say, it was a hell of a lot of fun. Wii + wine = a really great time.

Took some doing, but finally managed to track one down on craigslist for not too much over retail. It's amazing to me that, a year after release, they are still in such high demand that people can ask for and get such a premium for them. I tried buying one in a store, and that proved to be an exercise in futility. I called an EB Games, and they told me they were expecting a large shipment any moment. I work down the street and it was basically lunchtime, so I went on over to grab one. No more than 20 minutes later, I arrive and they tell me, yeah, they had them, but they were already sold out. Crazy stuff...

Any of you wii owners have any game recommendations that are wife-friendly? I've finally got her to embrace a video game system, so I can't follow that up with Madden or something. Gotta stick with pick-up and play sorts of games that rely heavily upon the motion sensing of the wii remote...

I think that Rayman Raving Rabbids is cute and pretty fun: http://raymanzone.us.ubi.com/ravingrabbids/index.html

Re: Getting a Wii

btw, for those of you keeping score at home, ended up picking up the following wife-friendly games yesterday:

Wii Play (to get the extra controller) Wario Ware: Smooth Moves Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz Sonic and the Secret Rings

Almost got Rayman, too, but decided I didn't want to blow my wad right out of the gate. Will be picking up RE4 for myself here shortly to get in the proper mindset for the Halloween season, though. :)

Picking it up at lunch, hooking it up this evening. Very excited!

Re: Getting a Wii

My kids are interested in one and I was going to go buy one but the mother-in-law said she wants to get the kids one so she said she'll hook us up with the game system, extras and at least ten games so I'm not complaining. I see these all of the time available at Fry's and Costco. Don't know why they're selling out everywhere else.

Re: Getting a Wii

I saw them a decent amount over the summer, but now that it's starting to get to the point where people are shopping for Xmas, they seem to be back in short supply, I think. Oh well, what do I care, I've got mine. :)

Re: Getting a Wii

Our luck she'll go buy it way too late and then I have to tell her yet again, "Told you so." Women. Jesus.

Re: Getting a Wii

You should alert her that if she sees one, she ought to snap it up. Check this out:

Re: Getting a Wii

I know she likes to shop at Target and Sam's Club since she has a lifetime discount so she should be fine. Every time I've been in the local stores, I've seen plenty of those things in stock. I think most of the kiddies in this area have them because when I see threads about Wii sightings, I see the SoCal residents interjecting that they don't see a problem in local stores.

I see those are for online retailers so maybe that's why it's harder to get them there. Thanks for the tip though. I'd love to get a black Wii so it doesn't look so gay.

Re: Getting a Wii

can anyone point me to a site where i can get a wii for $200-$300 for just the basic system?

would be helping out a friend of mine greatly, thanks in advance.

unfortunately, the answer is a resounding "no." I have a bunch of friends that have begun trying to find them after playing ours, and it's just been an exercise in futility finding them through normal channels. Your best bet is to get on craigslist and watch it like a hawk, like literally rechecking every 30 minutes or so -- you might be able to find a used one for somewhere in that price range, if that's an acceptable option.

Good luck!

friend of mine just picked up one on craigslist. they're out there, but you gotta move fast.

Re: Getting a Wii

We just got a new one this week for my son for christmas. Here is what my wife did. She was driving home from work and got an idea to stop at one of those rental places, the places where you pay weekly for like $20 or so. So she stopped and asked if they had any, at the time she was there they did not but the guy said he was going to call around. She waited about 5 minutes and the guy comes back and said he will have one tomorrow. He called her at work and she stopped by and picked it up. No rental required as we paid for the whole thing (which you can do at these places). My son is going to be extremely happy, and we are relieved because we couldn't locate one for the past couple of months.

Re: Getting a Wii

There are websites (I can't think of what they are right now, sorry) that will alert you when one comes in stock at a store near you. I didnt' use it to get a wii, but I did get my extra wii controllers using one of these sites last year. I'll try to find out what the website is in the meantime.

UPDATE: the website is http://www.nowinstock.net/

My wife did the same thing. The only place that had one in stock and she just happened to think of it, called them and they held it and threw in Harry Potter for free!

Re: Getting a Wii

^^ We got the sport package, but no free games (other than the one's that come with it). Also bought mario & sonic and crash and a few others. My son is going to be so excited!

Re: Getting a Wii

yeah, I'm with you, my two boys are going to piss themselves. I've been playing with their emotions about it the whole time. I keep telling them that they are really hard to find and they may have to wait until after xmas to get one, they hang their heads and respond with "it's ok dad, we can do without." Can't wait for them to open. Still have to get guitar hero, zelda, big brain academy and tiger woods(this one is for me, don't get to play much golf in the winter).

#945669Post 27 of 34

Re: Getting a Wii

I am going to get guitar hero as well. My wife loves it on the PS2 and we are currently borrowing it from someone. Little does she know I am getting it for her for christmas for the Wii. It's funny because I usually eat dinner when I get home, but there were a couple of times the food was ready but I ate alone because she was in the other room playing it  She loves that game!

Re: Getting a Wii

If you live in Southern Cal, you can easily get a Wii at the shops. GameStop, Fry's, Circuit City, Target, Best Buy and Costco get these weekly and some shops even get at least two shipments a week. And yes, you can get just the basic system.

Re: Getting a Wii

I've been doing research online and run into some crazy stuff that people are doing. There's a community dedicated to people that created the Wii Browser for use on the PC so you can make channels, run your emulators on it and people have gone as far as making a sensor bar and using the Wii-mote on the pc as well. Then there are people who have figured out how to get Virtual Console games to play on the pc but that's pretty much pointless since those games were already available online for free. If anyone is in need of points, you can get cards for 17.99 through Amazon and then just add on something extra for free shipping. I got a card and then a 2GB SD card for $26 total so I'll be buying some games for the little ones.

Re: Getting a Wii

^ I saw a video of guy who used the wii remotes to set up a virtual drum kit on on his PC. Kinda cool...but kinda Nerd Alert at the same time.

Re: Getting a Wii

Yeah. I mean, I'll read this stuff because it's interesting but these people have way too much time on their hands. I will admit that I'm going to get a larger hard drive for the PS3 and install other OSs so that I can slap some emulators on there and play all kinds of stuff.
