So my brother (who's visiting from India) bought the 16 gig iTouch over the weekend in NYC. I was skeptical about its abilities i.e. merely an iPod with tons of eye-candy stuff - but I must admit I have fallen for it dearly. In addition to the fantastically smooth scrolling, the web browser and the contacts list, the one feature that I missed in my 3rd gen iPod and was happy to see it in the iTouch is the ability to "Shuffle" tracks from a playlist. In my 3rd genner, I could only shuffle the entire ipod and not songs from my playlist. The widescreen photo viewer is a handy tool that I could see myself getting used to.

I'll give it a 4 on 5 (not 5 on 5 cause it's a 16 GB mp3 player for $399 - $432 after taxes)

Re: iTouch

Apple is sending me laser engraved ipod Touch tomorrow. I chose to have it engraved with "Just wait and see" because on the iPod Nano i have now i have "Its gonna be a lovely day, for you and me". Both from the Brancaccio & Aisher song "Its gonna be a lovely day". :)

Mine is going to have just the title of my favorite track of all-time. Kinko, The Child Loving Clown

Re: iTouch

hehe, Kinko ...

i still dont get it why everyone is so excited with those iPods, iPhones, except that i have to admit that they are stylish.

if i needed a player, only thing i would think about are those ZENs, or maybe some of those Chinese stuff, cheap and cool, and you can change them every few months.

Correct. Plus once it is jailbroken, you can get some really sweet themes, backgrounds, etc.

Re: iTouch

anyone here personally jailbreak their itouch? how long does it take, how difficult is it?

#1314798Post 19 of 46

Re: iTouch

When I first got my original 1st gen itouch 3 years ago, jailbreakin was slightly tricky and took me a while to figured out.

Do you have a 3rd gen itouch? If so its pretty straight forward and will not take longer than 10 minutes. However it a tethered jailbreak. Forgot to mention earlier Winterboard app is a must have as well.

#1314810Post 20 of 46

Re: iTouch
However it a tethered jailbreak.
Yes 3G...

...tethered?

Did you notice your itouch functioned slower in general after it was jailbroken?

#1314889Post 21 of 46

Re: iTouch

Pandora is a must have app as well.

I've never had the urge to jailbreak mine. there's such a wealth of apps on there already, not sure that there's anything only accessible via jailbreak that seems worth the trouble, IMO. Never really looked into it, though.

#1315100Post 22 of 46

Re: iTouch

Nope never had an performance issues after the jailbreak.

The tethered jailbroken itouch will reset once you power cycle off. However you will not lose your settings. I agree with toasty, there is definitely a wealth of apps even without the jailbreak, however if you enjoy fiddling around and hacking gadgets, then its a must do :D

Re: iTouch

i just joined itunes without a credit card and added shoutcast radio...

I didn't really think about Shoutcast Radio, but that would be sweet to have.

Re: iTouch

^It's similar to sirius, but free.

I installed iCall, it works really well...now I can make free calls from my itouch, no jailbreaking necessary.

I also installed an app called "where" and love it...

#1315193Post 26 of 46

Re: iTouch

Is iCall similar to Skype? Skype is a free app as well.

#1315197Post 27 of 46

Re: iTouch

I think icall simplifies things a bit... you download it and then dial to make calls, that's it.

Yeah - TouchDJ : http://www.amidio.com/index.php/iphone-music-apps/touch-dj

Kind of expensive for an iPhone/iTouch app though.

And apparently it only uses it´s own licensed tracks, so it can´t access your iTunes library, but that´s more of an Apple limitation than the developer´s fault, and no developer can get around this at the moment, really.

On a side note, I bought the Novation Automap app (also available for iTouch) and now I can assign some of my MIDI controls to this app, effectively controling some of my Ableton Live FX with my iPhone 8)

Everyday I´m amazed at what this thing can do!

Re: iTouch

Thanks for the info Kinetic... I will give it a try. I was looking for something that could pull tracks from my library but I suppose apple may have a problem with that eh.

It cant play tracks from your library on your ipod, but you have to upload the tracks you want to mix seperately, so you can put your own tracks on.
