Anyone use this guy yet ? Seems like a fantastic (albeit expensive) way to setup a huge RAID type setup with multiple drives at home for your precious files.

Re: Drobo
wow. That is cool. I am starting to get quite a collection of externals. This would be a very cool resolution.
Re: Drobo
Niceee, looks real practic. How can you connect it the PC? USB, Firewire?
Re: Drobo
I believe USB and Firewire, it's not an NAS yet. Plugin any type of SATA drive out of the box and it will build the drive into the RAID automatically.
Re: Drobo
wow. nice. how much? do you know Kamal?
Re: Drobo
its $499 for the Unit alone (drives are extra) but I was looking for more info on the software that controls the RAID / Backup and couldn't find anything meaningful.
Best is if one of the drives fails or is full, the green light turns red, just swap it out for a new one and it'll rebuild itself. No guide rails, plastic clamps, or anything extra required. Drives simply slide in and out.
Re: Drobo
I see, very nice solution! Bit expensive for me. but really practic! Ill consider buying one... do you know how its cooled? Or is it cooled somehow? (it should be i think..)

sucks that it doesn't comes with firewire
Re: Drobo
Is it fast enough then?
Re: Drobo
I've seen an extremely similar version of this one somewhere for $299. Had the same features on it. I didn't go for it though because it was USB. Fuck that.
Re: Drobo
I wanted one until i saw that it used something resembling RAID 5 and i dont want that. I like having my files safe but i want to be able to decide if they are to be backuped or not, because i dont feel the need to have a backup of downloaded movies and MP3s - you can always download them again. So i bought a bigger computer case, extra controller card and fitted the disks inside of the new case instead.
Re: Drobo
Full size case. More, larger capacity HDDs.
Re: Drobo
any more opinions on this?
looking for a good option to get a time machine HD for my new imac plus more storage for whatever else.
Re: Drobo
it's award winning. Just buy it. Problem is its USB only, I think future models are coming with RJ45 network connectivity so they can be tucked away out of sight, connected to your router.
Re: Drobo
is there any way to configure the raid so that you can have one hard drive dedicated to time machine and the other 3 dedicated to music etc?
Re: Drobo
dunno, check their site / support forums. Can google around later if you want. But why would you wanna do that ?? Is your data going onto time machine expendable ? Just separate everything on drobo by folders and the let the raid do its job. With a single HD config, you'd might as well leave your stuff undeleted on your Machine's HD.
Re: Drobo
First the Roomba, now the Drobo, what's next in the realm friendly time saving robots?
