WIN XP - My network places are gone

Hello folks,

here i come again with a new problem after some time without them.

I have Win XP SP2 installed, and i have a home network over D-Link wireless router DI-524. Few days ago i noticed that shared folders from My network places were gone, there are not even my shared folders shown. The other 3 notebooks in the network work fine, but my rig isn't there.

After that a dial-up window started showing occasionally, wanting to connect to my VPN connection. Did some scans with multiple scanners, removed some trojans, few of them were back the same day later, and again removed all.

I have searched around a little but didn't find any similar problems reported.

Pinging to other PCs in network works, i think around 100ms or something.

Ideas? And please don't tell me to reinstall OS. Thanks

Re: WIN XP - My network places are gone

If you can still view the folders by clicking "View Workgroup Computers" then you could just map the folders to a drive letter on your computer (Right click the folder, map network drive). If not try to unistall and reinstall the ethernet drivers.

have you tried re-installing your network card (and wifi as well) drivers ?

Re: WIN XP - My network places are gone

i did that, but no change,

can it have something to do with a virus or like? a friend of mine told me that it is possible to get a virus in BIOS, but i never heard of that before, except something with rootkits.

Re: WIN XP - My network places are gone

What would happen if you were to delete your network and then readd it again? I'm only suggesting that because I know it doesn't take long to do. Then you can power down your system that was having issues and see if the network still shows up intact.
