So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

.... and with the Mrs. taking up all the waking hours on the only laptop we have, I made probably one of the most impulsive decisions I've ever made and ended up getting a Sony Vaio last Saturday. (Well I also need it a shit load for the hosting).

This thing is pretty neat, great looking, Core 2 Duo T7100 (1.8 GHZ processor), 2 gig ram, 200 GB HD, Wireless B/G/N, Vista Home Premium (I'm about to get to my bitch fest here in a minute) built in Camera, Dual Layer DVD Burner, for $1350.

I uninstalled the mounds of bloatware that this crap came with and man the Internet transfer speeds have taken an ass kicking for some reason. I can barely get past 50kb/sec and my XP Notebook on the same network slides by 300kb/sec with no problems.

Anyone have any ideas / links what I can try to my web speeds back up ? I googled around for 4 hours yesterday but to no avail.

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Install the drivers for your network adaptors?

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

yea I upgraded to the latest ones from Intels site but no avail. I googled around like mad and seems a majority of the people who had issues with slow internet was because of MacAfee. Mine doesnt even have MacAfee, it only had Norton and I remove it even before I went on the net.

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Did your Sony come with its own software to manage your wireless connection? IIRC, notebacks like Sony or Dell have a button on their notebooks to enable/disable wireless connectivity and that in turn, toggles the software. Perhaps installing that component from the Sony setup discs might help? Assuming there's some proprietry way that Sony is handling its wireless network adaptor?

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

well its got the 5ghz / wireless N chipset software and I completely turned if off but no luck. Believe it or not, this thing came with ZERO discs. I'm pretty pissed off and will call Sony this week and see if I can get some sort of backup discs.

So to answer the Q, I'll have to double check about the wireless button but I've disabled the software hoping it would make the diff, unfortunately nada.

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Shouldn't it come with a set of restore discs? How else are you gonna re-install the Sony bloatware if you accidentally deleted them or formatted the hdd?

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

I know Mike, I was really looking to join the Mac club this year but at the same time I needed something to work on the servers when I was at home even more.... and esp during the weekends and it was becoming increasingly impossible with Sugana's school.

Hopefully I will make another impulsive Mac purchase next summer. Sorry to disappoint you dude.

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

hopefully you dont have the same problems but my firend works with the sony playsation 3 north american division and he has one of those beefy core duo viao lap tops and he was just listing the software and hardware bugs hes has... including the tracker breaking almost right when he got it and software updates up the wazu... hes a huge computer nerd too, he jsut said its things that are basically just annoyances that he can fix but waist his time. but like i said i hope you dont have any of those problems and that you have a good warrenty on that mofo

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

dude, I strongly recommend that you not view the Leopard preview that came out today that outlines all the new features. Apart from the user-friendliness and intuitiveness that Macs are know for, it takes the one area that Vista really trumpets about -- its aesthetics -- and beats it like a rented mule.

Looks like you are only getting the "G" out of your laptop, not the full N or (draft or pre).

Kamal, return the Sony! It's not too late!:lol:

At least you guys have return policies ... not so in Asia :(

#874032Post 30 of 54

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

I cant return the Sony, there's a 15% restocking fee that I am not willing to take a hit for. Plus its going to be months before Leopard is out and I sadly cant keep my hosting obligations from being in limbo any further :(

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Well, I'm sure you'll find a need for a Mac later on ...

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

well waiting for leopard to release would only save you about 130bucks for the upgrade compared to getting stuck with the sony which you dont exactly need if you get the macbook pro .... if you can return the sony imo why not .... think about it

Dont get me wrong, I will snag one of them suckers just for the "must have" aspect of it. Just gonna be a little later.

My brother in law just got an MBP, 15" with 4 gb ram (he works at a univ. and has to run simulations), extra battery, case, and a few other goodies to match. He ended up with a bill of like $4400. The reasons I went with a Notebook (as opposed to this Sony) was the urgency of my need, the configuration (wireless N + 200 GB HD + dual layer DVD burner) all that for about $1100 cheaper for a similarly configured MBP (granted the MBPs have 2 up on the notebook with dedicated video cards and 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo processors as opposed to 1.8 on the Sony) and the fact that I got 0% interest financing through Circuit City which I wouldn't have gotten with the Apple.

#877059Post 34 of 54

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

point taken ... if apple has 0% interest financing everyone would probably be getting their hands on one

#877072Post 35 of 54

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Yea, Circuit City was carrying a whole bunch of Apples and they suddenly stopped carrying the Mac Books and MBPs (lord knows why). Even then I would be hard pressed (at this juncture in time) to consider the 15" MBP considering the one I was eyeing was $2499 ($1150 more than this Sony :( )

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

Circuit City is closing stores and not doing well at all.

Re: So I couldn't wait for Leopard's release....

I just got an email saying they are doing 0% financing before june 30th, LOL
