we expect a no holds barred full review with photos if possible ;)

"We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007," he wrote. "Our ability to completely eliminate fluorescent lamps in all of our displays depends on how fast the LCD industry can transition to LED backlighting for larger displays."
The Apple co-founder's comments offer the hardest form of confirmation to an exclusive AppleInsider report on the company's plans for its next-generation MacBook Pro notebooks.
In January, AppleInsider reported that a revision to Apple's 15-inch MacBook Pro due this year would mark the start of a gradual transition away from cold cathode fluorescent backlights (CCFLs) and towards LED backlights for the Mac maker.
At the time, people familiar with the matter said Apple had agreed to implement the LED technology only within a revision to its 15-inch MacBook Pro but was mulling a broader expansion to the 17-inch model and across its 13-inch consumer MacBook line. Jobs' comments on Wednesday suggest the company is accelerating plans for adopting the technology across all of its products.
In addition to being more environmentally friendly than CCFLs, LED technology is more efficient at distributing lighting evenly across the entire display surface and offers an increase in color saturation. It also consumes less power, runs cooler, and lasts longer than CCFLs.
For end users, the new technology translates into improved notebook battery life and displays that will maintain their initial levels of brightness longer into their respective life-cycles. Come this fall, LED-lit displays will also deliver a more vivid canvas for the various software user interface enhancements and animation techniques that will be included with Apple's Mac OS X Leopard operating system overhaul. For me, this is the coolest thing about the LED display -- longer battery life. Will be interested to see the real-world specs, and if it really makes a difference...
Re: New MacBook Pros
well that tells me about the led display, but what's with this "Santa Rosa processor"? I'm going to do some research on this.
Re: New MacBook Pros
Intel's upcoming Merom processor will get a boost in March 2007 when the company unveils its Santa Rosa platform, in the form of a faster front-side bus and improved wireless chips.
Later this year, Intel plans to release Merom, a new dual-core notebook processor based on a new set of chip design rules. Merom is based on the same low-power principles that make up the Core Duo processor, Intel's first dual-core notebook chip.
But Merom has 64-bit support built into the chip and larger amounts of cache memory. In the last few years, Intel has introduced new chipset technology and wireless chips alongside a new processor. But Merom will be dropped into the existing 945GM and 945PM chipsets launched in January with the Core Duo. By March 2007, Intel will upgrade Merom's chipset and wireless technology with the Crestline chipset, which will be released as part of the Santa Rosa platform, according to industry sources. PC Watch first reported the new products on its Web site.
Crestline will up the speed of Intel's front-side bus to 800MHz. The front-side bus connects the processor to memory and is a crucial link that affects system performance. Intel rival Advanced Micro Devices has enjoyed a performance advantage over Intel in recent years because it decided to integrate the front-side bus directly onto its Opteron, Athlon 64 and Turion processors. This allows the memory controller to run at the same speed as the processor.
A faster front-side bus will improve the performance of 2007 Santa Rosa notebooks as compared with 2006 systems based on Merom and the 945 mobile chipsets. That chipset currently uses a 667MHz front-side bus.
Santa Rosa's wireless chip is known as Kedron, and it will probably support the forthcoming 802.11n wireless standard, according to sources. Chips based on the 802.11n standard will use MIMO (multiple in, multiple out) technology to improve the bandwidth and range of Wi-Fi networks. Wireless networking products certified for 802.11n are expected to arrive in early 2007.
An Intel representative confirmed that Santa Rosa is the code name for Intel's next-generation mobile platform in 2007, but declined to comment on other aspects of the technology.
Intel code names tend to reflect the names of towns and cities around the geography where the chips were designed. Most of the company's mobile technology over the last few years has been designed in Israel, with code names such as Banias, Dothan and Yonah. Earlier in the decade, names such as Prescott, Tualatin and Willamette reflected the surroundings of the company's design teams in Hillsboro, Ore. Santa Rosa is a town in California located about an hour north of San Francisco and about 100 miles from Intel's headquarters in Santa Clara.
Re: New MacBook Pros
^^pretty cool, eh?
Re: New MacBook Pros
yeah not bad. I just wish I could afford one of them, but i'd rather have an Imac, simply because I don't move around much and I want a computer dedicated to music.
Re: New MacBook Pros
fucking cant wait for leopard to come out now.....
Re: New MacBook Pros
shit man, i'm still rocking my 700mhz iBook w/10.3.9 i better update mah computerz
Re: New MacBook Pros
im using a 1Ghz ibook w/ 10.4.9 it still works fine but its really overdue for an upgrade
Re: New MacBook Pros
All that new tech is :Anal::CandyPop::RightOn::twisted:
Re: New MacBook Pros
took me a minute to decode that one.
Re: New MacBook Pros
in attempts to sober up and prepar for law school next year, one of the things im gonna do is get a macbook pro, i plan to use mercuryserver as my guide and as my teck support.... question number one... is it easy to get the dual platform thing going on macs? i wan to run windows nt on my mac.. is that possible or do you have to run win xp?
Re: New MacBook Pros
the apple site says lepard is out on october... im i right to think thats its a no brainer to wait till it comes out?
Re: New MacBook Pros
why wait... the MacBook Pro is as good today as it is tomorrow... as far as Windows is concerned you can either run BootCamp or use Parallels (which in the middle of June will be getting a SUBSTANTIAL overhaul with directx and opengl support)
Re: New MacBook Pros
and I think Leopard will be out a tad bit sooner than October... too conservative
Re: New MacBook Pros
Well Leopard will be released with Bootcamp as a part of the OS pre-installed, not sure if its free right now. And yes Lrn waiting for Leopard will be a good idea. Its supposed to be a notable overhaul over Tiger.
Re: New MacBook Pros
Since so many of us are considering the move to Apple (including me), thought I'd share this little goody
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3747
Pros
[]Best screen ever, with great brightness thanks to the power saving LEDs []Iconic and sexy design []Small perks like slot loading drive, and backlit keyboard []Variety in ports, including optical audio and DVI []Built in iSight, an excellent web-cam []Powerful system, with great standard performance justifying the price
Cons
[]No built in media card reader []Heavy to be carried often
Only 2 USB ports

Final Conclusions This is an excellent upgrade to the MacBook Pro, I'm extremely satisfied with it so far. I'm new to Mac computers, new to OS X, but I am one happy switcher. The MBP would be an excellent choice for anyone looking to purchase a performance laptop, or even desktop replacement. Combine that performance with Apple's sexy design, and the MBP is a great purchase.

Bootcamp is a free beta right now.
Re: New MacBook Pros
I'd be scared of using a beta with windows vista :p
Re: New MacBook Pros
I'd be scared of using a beta with windows vista :p
I didn't say I used it ;)
But at any rate, bootcamp essentially just partitions your HD and burns you a windows drivers CD... pretty minimal.
Re: New MacBook Pros
sounds interesting, have you used it yet ? any thoughts / impressions ?
Re: New MacBook Pros
sounds interesting, have you used it yet ? any thoughts / impressions ?
I have used it on several machines at work. It's pretty easy... the annoying party is the actualy windows installation. I haven't used it with vista, only XP pro...
Re: New MacBook Pros
was reading some info about my school next year and they dont recomend using macs becasue of soem examination software that is designed for pcs only... do you think thats not gonna be a problem if i run parrelles? not sure what the program consistes of is but im sure its not that complex.... need to email my school and find out. i really dont want a pc
Re: New MacBook Pros
no if it loads windows, it will load any windows based software
Re: New MacBook Pros
it might be a slightly bad thing that it only has two USB ports....
BUT this also comes with two Firewire ports too. So that kinda balances it all out. And frankly I think i'd rather have the firewire ports than USB.
Re: New MacBook Pros
yea and i have to have a mouse so that makes jsut one usb port
Re: New MacBook Pros
yeah me too. I can't stand to use the trackpad on laptops. I guess with a mac, i'd have to buy one of those adapters that take one usb port and make two out of it.
Re: New MacBook Pros
The trackpads on macbooks are amazing... you might be surprised
Re: New MacBook Pros
yea and i have to have a mouse so that makes jsut one usb port
built-in bluetooth, though -- just get a BT mouse...
Re: New MacBook Pros
just get a usb adapters and u should be fine with the usb ports .. personally i would rather they increase the number of firewire ports ... but anyway u look at it the new macbook pro is a really good deal imo ... a price drop with improved specs ... whats not to like about that?
Re: New MacBook Pros
i get 2 hundo off and a free nano as a student too... i really want to get one now, im such a little kid
