I notice that HD/BR drives are available for installation into computers and whatnot. Anyone know if a regular computer monitor cable is capable of carrying an HD signal, or if you would have to have a video card with component/HDMI output to be able to take advantage of the high def DVDs?

Re: HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Computer Drives

What do you consider a regular computer monitor cable? We talking about a DB-15 connection or DVI? Single Link or Dual Link? I honestly don't know what is the max resolution of a DB-15 connection but being that it's Analog I would assume it's safe to say that DVI is the better route. Standard Single Link DVI cables will transfer an HD quality signal since regular HD resolution is 1368 x 766? It's been a while since I read up on it so I could be off. I'm sure someone here has the stats on it.

DB-15. Bascially, I have a computer hooked up to a 62" HD set via DB-15 cable that I use for, among other things, a media center. Was wondering if I could install an HD drive in the computer and watch HD movies on the TV that way rather than buying a standalone player.

Still on the fence as to format, though. Guarantee you that whichever one I pick, the other format will be the one that sticks. My closet is full of Betamax VCRs, Atari Jaguars, and other technologies that seemed like a good idea and the time but never took off commercially.

Re: HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Computer Drives

As far as I'm aware you require a card with HDCP. And the only ones to have that are the GeForce 8800 series (probably any in the 8x00) and the latest ATI cards. You'll easily be able to view 720p (1280x720) video on your VGA monitor whereas you'll need a bit of a beast for 1080i/p (1920x1080) - I think these come with DVI connectors. But I'm pretty sure a D15 cable can carry 1080p.

I have an EGVA 7900gs (a256-P2-N623-AR) and it is hdcp capable, but it was an option at the time.

Re: HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Computer Drives

i wouldn't consider buying either until that bloody format war is won. its beta vs vhs all over again...

Re: HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Computer Drives

^^yes, probably wise to wait. I have heard talk of content providers just burning both formats onto a single disc, which is apparently feasible. Even if they do that, though, you know one is going to eventually take the torch.

Blu-Ray is winning the battle. Especially, since Microsoft announced they will be making a blu-ray player for the Xbox 360. :roflmao:
