Released today. Suddenly the ?500 I spent on the thing doesn't seem as bad as I thought.

In a nutshell this is what you get:

The PS3 can now search for streaming media servers for video and audio. Massive potential there and makes the thing far more attractive. Upscales PSOne/PS2 games to whatever you've set your PS3 up for. Mines at 1080i and it looks pretty damn good. Also adds a smoothing option to tighten up the jagged edges. Even my PS One games are looking pretty good considering. Gonna try 720p later on. Can now watch Blu-Ray discs in 720p. DVD player now upscales DVD's far better. Upscaled DVD video looks fantastic. Option now for HDMI to display the full range of colours. Can now plug printers in and print straight onto them. Memory card adaptors can now move data back onto the PS2/PSOne memory cards. Thank christ for that.

Such an amazing difference on DVD's now. Just stuck Casino Royale on and it was sooo much clearer, brighter and shaper. Everything where it was supposed to be too. Tried the same scene on my normal DVD player and it all seemed washed out, blurry, lack of depth, noticable jaggies and parts of the picture weren't quite in the right place.

The PS3 does such an amazing job of upscaling it you'd wonder why you'd bother getting Blu-ray.

I saw that the price of PS3s has gone down too. Seen a combo with the PS3, extra controller, two games going for like $560 the other day. Nice.

I am really enjoying the upscaling on PSone and PS2 games. Makes it nice to play them on the wide screen tv.

^^ Not sure. My resolution is set to 1080i. They look a lot better now then they did before 1.8

The upscaled games look very smart imo. Gran Turismo 4 may as well be a PS3 game it looks very good (well, not that good, but you get the idea).

Does anyone have any comparison screenies of upscaling (regular) DVDs on the PS3 after the firmware update ? My Sony DVD player doesnt really appear to be doing much upscaling and I'm wondering how much of a noticeable difference there is on PS3

It's dependant on the TV you're using. Some are shite at upscaling SD sources whilst others can do it so well its not noticable. My TV is quite a low end jobbie. It's SD scaling isn't great but its passable for normal telly. Wasn't much fun watching movies on it tho. With the PS3's scaler its soooo much better, sharper and vibrant.

I personally can't tell the difference. If there is a difference after the update it doesn't seem that drastic.
