Added a Vista system to my network to replace an older box that had crapped out on me. Although I'm able to connect it to the internet through my wireless router no problem, I can't seem to figure out how to get it to connect to my other computers (which are XP computers) in the network for file sharing, printer sharing, etc. Is there something I need to do to get the Vista computer to play nice with XP computers?

Networking with Vista
Re: Networking with Vista
i dont know how but there is a patch for a glitch on vista networking that makes file transfers slow as hell, the patch isn't official on windows update but you can look for it on microsoft.com i know this has nothing to do with the thread but just in case, it improves networking 2342352454325235 times
Re: Networking with Vista
as an update, I scoured the internet for answers and found that this is actually a very common problem with no straightforward fix. After dipping around with it for a while, I finally got it to work, although I still have no idea how.
The bigger question, though, is why is it such a bitch to get Vista and XP to play nice? With all of the emphasis on home networking these days, why would MS create a product that is effectively incompatible with its prior product without jumping through all kinds of hoops? For example, I learned through much searching that I had no prayer of getting it to work without installing LLDP on the XP machine, but I had to fucking dig to even find that much out...
What's worse, when I called Microsoft telephone support, they were unwilling to help me because Vista was preinstalled on an HP computer, and referred me to HP. HP was unable to help me because their normal tech support people are not trained on network issues, but they did magnanimously offer to connect me to a different department that would help me out for $70 for 45 minutes time.
Fucking Microsoft.
Re: Networking with Vista
are you only looking to share the drives on the vista machine ? I in fact found networking to be a dream from Vista i.e. share the contents of a vista machine on an XP machine.
Re: Networking with Vista
^^no, was kinda the opposite -- wanted to be able to access certain folders/drives on my XP computer via a Vista box...
Re: Networking with Vista
Yes sir, can confirm that is nightmare on Redmond Street.
Re: Networking with Vista
btw instead of trying to share the XP drive to grab data from the Vista Machine, why dont you share the Vista drives, map the drive onto your XP Machine and simply paste the files from your XP Machine onto the mapped drive to move stuff in between. I know its not a fix for your printing option but its a workaround for file sharing at least.
Re: Networking with Vista
Did you install LLDT? I installed this piece so that I could get information about my XP machine using the network map. When I used it before my XP machine would show up in the map but it wasn't recognizable, after the install it was. btw...you install this on the XP machine.

Here is a pdf discussing LLDT http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/c/7/ac7be8a1-424d-4f6f-945c-e2326fb0769c/Rally02_LLTD.pdf

Yes, I did, although that didn't immediately resolve the problem. I'm candidly not real sure what did ultimately fix the problem, but I got it working. Just kept tinkering with it, and eventually the XP machine showed up in the network.
Re: Networking with Vista
That was the only thing that really fixed my issue. I could go to a run line and type in my share, but if I wanted to view all of the shares I couldn't. But here is another thing, I don't have that problem on the domain, only in a workgroup environment.
Re: Networking with Vista
The thing with the LLDT deal is that its so poorly documented that you have to do that. What, did MS expect everyone to upgrade every computer in their house all at once?
Re: Networking with Vista
That's the idea. They advertised it just as much if not more than Win 95, so they were hoping to get a good response. In theory they did as they have sold 40 million units, but out of that how many people are happy with it?
Re: Networking with Vista
well, you can leave me off of the list of happy customers. I'm using Vista begrudgingly because there is no other alternative when you buy a new system, but I'd much prefer to stick with XP for the time being...
Re: Networking with Vista
I was much happier with it after I ran it through vlite and got rid of a whole bunch of things i didn't need.

vlite ?
