No, I am not saying you need to be a nerd to have an opinion, but you need to have at least a basis of an opinion rather than just saying Macs / Windows suck.

mac is lame because they've lied to their customers, they've lied to magazines about benchmarks and performance and they keep claiming their OS is nearly perfect when we all know it isn't, they force you to install itunes when all you want is just quicktime and guess what THEY DELAYED LEOPARD.

... and microsoft has being lame since 92 when i got a compaq presario with windows 3.11 in it. the problems have never stopped since then. but overall i'm a pc user because i like many programs that aren't avaliable on mac os so thats it.

Regarding your statement that Macs aren't "perfect", well nothing in this world is mate, but OS10 being built on Linux is WAYYYY more perfect than any other PC based OS you'd get especially being backed by a MAJOR corporation (in comparison to the freebie releases of the Open Source community). And delaying Leopard doesn't make a Mac suck . If that was the case, Vista would be perfect cause they ended up releasing it way earlier than the "delayed" estimates they promised the world and then ended up shaving the head of the OS just to release it to satisfy customers.

As for Microsoft, yes, they are terrible I'll give you that. But its what we all use and we all have our love hate relation with Microsoft's shitty product, maybe moving to a Mac would be wiser eh ;)

Just recently began my first foray into the world of Vista, and I have to say, I'm still eagerly awaiting Leopard's release so I can pick up a MB or MBP. For the resources it demands, Vista is pretty underwhelming.

Re: Leopard Delayed to October

That fucking blows. Why would they delay Leopard for the iPhone? What happened to the already established user-base for the Mac OS, vs the iPhone? Get their priorities sorted!

are you running it on a single core machine ? Vista has been designed to abuse dual core boxes with plenty of Ram. So I'm pretty sure you'll see some sort of a benefit from beefier hardware (which is stupid because you'd probably see even better performance from the same hardware if you put a diff OS on it - Microsoft and its glorious achievement in delivering an OS full of eye candy)

No, it's an Athlon 64 X2 dual-core 4800+ w/ 2 GB of RAM. Problem isn't performance, though, it's the fact that I can't seem to get my peripherals to work. Haven't had a chance to go on and get update my drivers and whatnot, though, so I'm sure that will address the problem. Just a bummer to have to deal with with you're excited about picking up a new box...

Re: Leopard Delayed to October

I got my TV tuner card few weeks ago and while it works BRILLIANTLY, my 3.2 ghz P4 has become outdated for Vista (can you believe that).

So I'm actually gonna pick up a system from circuit city with the identical specs. Since its an HP and comes preloaded with vista, I'm thinking it'll be working out of the box.

Is your's branded or did you build it ? Also what peripherals do you not have working right now ?

It's an HP a6030n, and I'm not able to get my wireless keyboard and mouse working.

I'm also having issues with my USB wireless network adapter, but I wasn't delighted with the way that thing worked on my old system, so I think I'm just going to junk it and get a new one. Honestly, as I was dicking around with it last night, I noticed it was a little warped, so I'm going to give Vista a pass on that one.

Re: Leopard Delayed to October

^^for one thing, versatility. You can run Windows on a Mac, but you can't run OS X on a PC. Use OS X when you want to, Windows when you have to.

Moreover, though, I've used them both extensively over the years and for me, it's no contest -- Macs leave Windows-based computers in the dust. Now that I can actually run Windows on a mac when I need to, I can switch back with a clear conscience.

For my purposes Windows is superior and probably will always be superior. My purposes are to play PC games with the best graphics possible. Vista=Better compatibility with more PC games.

lmao I just checked the one I had been eyeing and its the same one toasty

Where and how much did you get it for ? Circuit City has it on sale for $719. What have been your experiences with it ? You using Media Center on it ? Have you peeped in ? How many available IDE / SATA slots does it have ?

I got mine at Best Buy -- can't recall exactly what I spent, but it was in that ballpark. Honestly, I haven't had much of an opportunity to use it yet. It didn't come with recovery disks, so the very first thing I wanted to do -- before adding software, anything at all -- was to create a set of recovery disks. Unfortunately, I didn't have appropriate media on hand (I had DVD+RW, it needed DVD+R) and just got that last night.

My attempts to create those disks was met with limited success -- the first disk was created just fine, but the second failed three different times. I called HP, and they are just sending me recovery disks, which actually is better AFAIC. Pain in the ass, though.

I haven't had it very long, and the time that I have had it, I've been out of town, so I really haven't had much of an opportunity to dip around with it at all. For my purposes, though -- it is a secondary computer, primarily for surfing the web in my living room and MAME -- it has plenty of pep.

Re: Leopard Delayed to October

thought this sucker came with a multi-dvd drive and lightscribe (where you can burn images/text on the front of a disc). Odd that it doesnt come with recovery OR Operating System discs considering it comes with Vista.

I briefly checked the "Computer Rating" thing that Vista has built into it and the CPU and Ram were both rated above 5.0 which is a very good sign considering both of those in my current setup are under 2.4, which means I can swap out my Video card to make this a pretty decent machine.

And since I will be using this mainly for my media center, I think its a decent buy.

What about noise ? Does it heat up and become a hair dryer ?

#846640Post 37 of 57

Re: Leopard Delayed to October

it does come with lightscribe, which was one of the draws to HP for me. I can never find a fucking Sharpie when I need one, lol.

Haven't noticed any issues with heat or noise so far.

That is, if you plan on storing data for later usage. They will eventually bleed through the top layer and into the data. They sell the proper markers for cheap too. Something like $2 for a pack of four.
