OK, so my dream machine is still out of price reach  However, I pulled the trigger today and bought some parts because I am literally ready to take this computer and throw it out the window...I've had it with this thing.

I ended up getting a rather economical system for just under $400. It'll be light years still ahead of what I have, and should run me fine for a while until I DO seriously upgrade

The Case ($40-$40 Rebate = FREE)

Thanks to Fatwallet, a nice black Ultra Wizard Mid-Tower case from Outpost..free after rebate. Solid build, and has enough to work with.

The Mobo/Processor/Heatsink ($52.99 + $44.99 + $100 = $197.98)

I'm taking a bit of a chance as it's Open Box from Newegg, but I've always had success on refurbished/open box purchases anywhere...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131032R ASUS P5NSLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI Intel Edition ATX Intel Motherboard - OEM

-Has good SLI-capability (8x, 8x on dual, 16x single), 16GB RAM support (god if I ever go there..) on a DDR2 667 (a bit low, but for the cost of this..), and enough inputs to satisfy.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16835106061 Thermaltake CL-P0114 120mm CPU Cooler - Retail

-Since Intel's heat sinks are pretty noisy and the like, this guy does the trick nicely...especially since I'm going to overclock the processor :D

Intel Pentium D 805 Dual Core 2.66GHz 533MHz 2x1MB

-I must have bought the last one at Outpost, because I can't find the page there...?? Well, Dual Core capability at an easy budget price...and there are reports that this baby has been OC'd to 4.1GHz w/o generating a furnace

2GB PC2-5300 667 DDR2 PC2 5400 240PIN 2 X 1 GB G GO RAM ($108 shipped)

-I really couldn't push on the superior brandnames, so I Fleabayed this one...but the pictures show Samsung chips on it, so could just be a "knockoff"...I've ran cheap SDRAM forever and never had a problem...and the performances right now I don't think would be a HUGE difference to me...it'll be a good start.

VIDEO CARD ($109.99-$20 Rebate = $89.99)

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16814130073 EVGA 256-P2-N550 -T2 GeForce 7600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card - Retail

-Perfect for the price...another Fatwallet find. Now I can get rid of AGP :p

Add of course all the old stuff I'll be ripping out of the ancient system..hard drives, burners, cards, etc. Probably will toss in soon some IDE to SATA converters as well for them...usually run $8-10 ea. on Ebay.

Total price: $397.59 after rebates

Now I just have to hope it all comes in one piece and there's no major problems putting it all together :CrackUp::CrackUp::CrackUp:

Yes, I could have maybe waited a bit more, but screw it...every few months something new is coming out anyway.

Re: Bought My New System

Congrats and I'm sure you'll be much happier with the upgrade but you should have grabbed a 925. I know, you'll see drastic differences in that 805 vs. what you had prior but that thing is stripped down and has none of the features that that series of dual core CPUs had. The single cores that came out prior to that one spanked it all over the boards. Anyways, hope it all comes together nicely.

#836131Post 3 of 28

Re: Bought My New System

hmm, I see the 925 went for $25 more...too late now as it's been shipped. I think though that a minimum 3.5GHz overclock on the 805 might still work out just as well (s'about average on it; the 4.1 was pushing it to the extreme)...maybe not fully as a 925 would per say, but after seeing some of the major benchmark tests, I think a 20/25-second difference in most cases isn't going to kill me

That's four sessions of masturbating you're losing out on. Or wait...

Re: Bought My New System

so yea, everything' s in now...but I had to RMA the board because it literally came OEM barebone...not 1 accessory w/it (one page I read said it could be missing some things, but another goes all the mobo's are OEM bareboard which I didn't see)...

so, I sucked up and got a PN5-E SLI instead...seems to be a decent board still, some complaints naturally, but it's expected.

Also totally forgot to get a better power supply too  Ran a 320 for years, but this system probably needs a 400 minimum..so I got a 600 to cover nicely on upgrades.

Alas, though I think the cheap RAM won't work on this; guess mobo's these days seem to be finicky on it...plugged EVERYTHING in nicely, booted up...no post, no beep, no video, no nothing...fans just run. Tried a few things, still the same...

Back to the drawing board for now...hooked the few parts out back into the old system to run...

Re: Bought My New System

Next update.

RAM works OK. I'm a moron. Forgot to pull the cover off of the processor  Guess this is what I get for a 1st build. After pulling it all apart and re-seating it (and putting everything back on), system boots, POSTS OK.

Next up is re-pulling apart the old one again and getting it all together...then comes the real fun part of driver installs, BIOS update needed, and tweaking and tweaking some more for OC'ing...and another stop to CrapUSA probably to pick up a couple of case fans barring I can find dirt cheap ones online...

So instead of $400, it's ~$550 now...still worth it in my book.

Re: Bought My New System

chech newegg for case fans, I picked up decent ones (fast and relatively quiet) Masscool branded fans.

What does all of this stuff do??

#839938Post 9 of 28

Re: Bought My New System

You can find better deals for case fans than Newegg. Try SVC, Xoxide, Coolerguys, Sundial Micro, etc. Not always the best but they frequently put up some awesome deals. I got some great Sunon 120mm fans a while back for $2 each with low shipping. Beat everyone else by at least $8 each.

#840042Post 10 of 28

Re: Bought My New System

SVC actually has some 80mm going for $.50 each...cheap enough? ;)

Actually all I need now is a 120mm; managed to find some screws and get the 80mm out of the old case to fit in the front slot as an intake...got a 120mm one at the moment from CUSA; Newegg has a dirt cheap one though that I may go with and basically get it for half price (for that, it's worth an extra couple of days on the shipping)..but I'll double-check on the other sites to be sure...it's nice as the Typhoon heatsink blows right out where the side vent is on the panel...the power supply I picked up has a variable temp. adjustment for its fan too. I'm really thinking I can get this sucker cranking nicely and keep it really cool...

Other then that, system is working now with everything in...letting it run while at work to ensure there's no resets, spasms, or anything of the like...

just a simple question. a simple answer will do. just wanted to know what all of this stuff does..don't have time for your smart ass answers. so, grow the fuck up and understand that you are not as cool as you think you are...that is all.

It's really interesting how you are nice to me in private, on Slsk...Then rude to me on a public forum....What a genuine person....

Re: Bought My New System

look who you're talking about

Rather then buy a pre-made system, it's a lot easier in the end to buy the exact components you want separately, as pre-made "name" systems often use cheaper components and don't allow expandability, or a lot of it for that matter.

But you got to pick it all out usually...the case, motherboard, processor type and speed, RAM and how much, heatsinks, case fans, burners, hard drives, connectors, the list goes on and on...while it's easy to burn through money and spend several grand on a "power" system, the one I just built works very well and can cost $5-$600 total...which is cheaper then some name-brand desktops in some cases, especially if you have parts you can dig out of an older system to use.

It's a complex puzzle sometimes, but you just need to double-check to ensure every thing's compatible with each other...

^ ^ Not a bad setup but if you actually listen to music, you'll want to get rid of that Soundblaster Live! card. You're gonna hate the output from that thing. A question here, "trible" fan? Do you mean triple? Damn, that has to be loud.
I don?t want to interrupt.... but you rock!
You know he was lying right? I'm the same to him in both respects but it's his own fault. Seriously, the kid doesn't understand what "fuck off" means.

Back to the topic... that CM Stacker is pretty cool. My coworker got one in February '06 and has a massive amount of low noise 120s in it.

audiotherapy, I would strongly suggest you upgrade that PSU sooner than later as Ultras are known for having bad efficiency and fluctuating power which we all know is bad. Hopefully, that Antec case holds up for you. The major gripe from owners of their cases are the plastic parts being quite flimsy and breaking on them. Not everyone complains, just the ones that have to put them together and have opened and removed parts several times. All of a sudden they can no longer fit properly and lots of noise is generated.
