ok heres what i got... i have currently a 160gb sata drive in my system. and i have 2 500gb sata's ready to go in.

i want to put the image of the current drive on a a raid 1 of the 2 500's i move over.

so, question 1) can i ... booting off an OS disk, copy the image of the current OS drive to the 500 disk.... using the disk utility

if so can i make the raid 1 after i copy the image over as i only have 2 hard drive bays? or do i have to get a raid card so that i can have the 3 drives loaded at once.

if i cannot use the disk utility, how do i do this? any apps that can copy the image over to some dvd's?

thanks!

Re: mac hard drive questions....

ok easier now.... found a cloning app. so now all i need to know is can i copy the image to one 500GB disk, then take out the 160, then put in the other 500GB disk in and RAID 1 them together? or do i have to get a raid card

It would be very difficult using only disc utility to do this. There is an application called partitionMaster that would probably work for you though.

Disc utility will move the 160 over though

thanks mike, but by the time i saw this i already used carbon copy cloner to make an image of my 160 drive. so i booted up on the 500 no problems ... then i went to look for a way to raid them (purely for backup purposes) then found out that it is not the best way to back up using a mirror. so i bought superduper and scheduled it to run every night and copy any new files over to my second hard disk. dont want any of my tracks disappearing on me!
