Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Jesus I just found out my local staples had the same HD for $10 less.... proud to say I am now an owner of 1 of these bad boys
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Wow thats is a deal. Have you used it yet?
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Yes I plugged it into my laptop and XP instantly recognized it. I am transferring close to 100 gb wirelessly over my network from my desktop but its slow as shit (so much for 802.11g).
It came pre-formatted in FAT32 so the first thing I did was formatted it to NTFS - which took forever. Also its not true 500 GB (about 465) which is a huge surprise. I would've felt it'd be closer to 480 or so - didnt expect losing 35 gigs off it.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
35gb is a lot to lose to a filesystem, wtf?
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
unless I have a bad drive - will call WD and see what they have to say
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Could be the byte allocation thingie ... can't remember the technical term. But with FAT32 and NTFS, you can control that. I will have a better idea when I can run my Partition Magic at home to see how they refer to what I'm trying to say :what
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
I have a Western Digital 500GB internal drive which is 465GB when formatted with NTFS.
Most harddisk knowingly makers use the 1'000'000'000 bytes = a Gigabyte method which we know is bollocks - as do the HDD makers, but it makes it look better.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Good to know, saved me a phone call :p
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
god dam it i would have to pay over ?250 for that here

Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
It would help if you were looking at the same model. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=410992
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
those are diff ? thought they're both 16 MB Buffer / 7200 RPM drives
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
But the one you are looking at is the bottom of the range USB 2 only MyBook. The next model up has Firewire 400 and the one up from that includes Firewire 800.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
I guess I snagged the bottom of the list one
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
You gotta do the math and you should know that you're not gonna get 500GB (binary) out of it. It even says so on the box at what formula they use. I saw this same drive getting clearanced out by either Staples or Office Depot a while back for like $110 and they sold pretty fast from what I heard. Big drives are fun. I recently added 2x250GB of Samsung Spinpoint storage drives to my file server for the great price of $138. Awesome price for drives that have faster access times and lower heat levels.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
circuit city has it at $169 AFTER rebate of $50
newegg.com has it for $168, shipped, no rebate.
save $50 bucks and go with newegg. OR you can get the 250gig hd for $112 shipped.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
newegg.com just went up then, I saw it the same day on newegg for $153 shipped
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
damn! oh well im going to see what they have at my local staples and circuit city before hitting up newegg...
i pretty much hit capacity on my 80g external and now im filling up my laptop hd which i did not want to do.
500gigs? i thought i had alot of porn and music already, i think ill go into download overload, hahaha
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
bought the Maxtor version at Staples a short time ago for ~$168 with tax after using a $15 off 75 coupon...
Don't pay more then the $179 though...and that's pushing it a bit. Otherwise wait, a model WILL drop in price soon enough (Maxtor, WD, etc.)
You could even go with a LaCie; often times a Maxtor or WD hard drive is inside of it....
Hell, sometimes you can get an internal dirt cheap, then throw a case over it; instant external.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
$159 now

Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Picked up two of the 500 GB Westen Digital My Book premium editions @ Costco.
First one I paid $220 two months ago and last week paid around $189 or so.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
^ ^ Those are going for $169 OTD at a local shop. I think it was even Circuit City. :roflmao:

I am sure you are right.
Lately I have been a big fan of Costco. I use to be the opposite.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
^ ^ The great thing about Costco is their lifetime warranty on parts. It's not listed, but it's an understood.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
I just saw the 500GB My Book with USB 2.0/eSATA on sale for $159. 500GB Internal drives are now below $120.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Just saw two 500GB internal HDDs for $119 OTD and you can get a fucking kick ass aluminum case for $30 easily.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179

Re: 500 GB External HD for $179

Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
There are now hybrid external drives going for $109 this weekend. Yep, that's for 500GB of storage. Remarkable.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
anybody seen any deals lately? i want to buy one. my current hard drive is about to explode!
i have a laptop with no firewire. i reckon i need a pc card for that? would i also need one for E-SATA?
I dont think i want just a USB2.0, a tom's hardware article showed that the speed of these were MUCH slower than those using firewire 800 or e-sata.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Trust me, USB 2.0 is plenty fast. Yes you can't compare the speed of a Ferrari and a Ford Focus but the Ford Focus will still go to 100 mph and that's plenty fast for regular use.
I used my 500 GB for a few days before returning it and I was able to transfer 150 GB back and forth from the drive, a LOT faster than I thought it would've taken.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
^ best buy has a few different brands with 500gb externals for 169. they also have 1tb external for 299
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
I know the BX on base has A 500gb Seagate external for like 189 or so. I'm pretty close to pick this thing up pretty soon. I'm sure best buy or Circuit City are comparable.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
great. thanks a lot for the deals and thanks kamal for that info, i shall buy just USB 2.0 then.
do you guys reckon there's much difference between a 8MB and 16MB buffer?
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
If you're not going to be near it to watch the transfers, you can settle for the USB 2.0 but if you are continually doing transfers then it gets very annoying at how slow it is. I've seen some externals on sale recently at Frys.com and other places. Sunday will be a good day to check as the new ads come out.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
WD 750GB external (USB2/FireWire) on sale @ Worst err I mean BestBuy tomorrow for I believe it was $179...
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Thats one heck of a steal. Shit I defo need to consider one of those. Any idea if any network based External's are popping up for cheap ? I've seen plenty but all are around $299 (and higher)
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
Kamal. Why did you return the External? I've read the whole thread and can't figure why you would not want one. I know I want one of those.
Re: 500 GB External HD for $179
kamal Newegg's sellling the western digital MyBook World Edition, ethernet based, for 193
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136084
im sorry, i reckon its a dumb question but i was also thinking about the ethernet one and i dont know if it will work for me.
my internet is dsl. the telephone line is connected to a wireless router on my room, but since this router's coverage is limited, an ethernet cable comes out of it and is connected to another wireless router, on the other side of the house, for wireless coverage over there.
if i buy an ethernet based external hard drive, and plug it in the router on my room: 1 - could i connect wireless to it, or would i still have to connect through ethernet? 2.- a computer connected to the router set up at the other side of the house, could it connect, through wireless or ethernet, to this hard drive?
