I know this is a geeky topic but I want to hear from ppl like myself who aren't necessarily the people who have the SUPER DOPESTYLE geek connections.

1.5mbit = 150 kbps... thats T1 speeds and slow from today's standard (sorry dont mean to bust your happy bubble), most cable + DSL these days is over 6 mbit/sec

I thought 1.5 mb was 1500 kbps but I won't pretend to know more than the Kamal :)

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

I used to get confused too..... mbps vs. mbit vs mBytes ... these conventions are a pain in the ass. Easiest way to remember is whenever you speak about home connectivity, its megaBits i.e. 1.5 x 1000 bits or x 100kbits = the download speeds you see on your PC when downloading from the web

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

yeah it is bits. not bytes. there 8 bits into 1 byte.

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

So when you guys are downloading most of you are getting it well over a mbps? I thought if I was getting say 1mbps and downloading an 86mb set I'd get it in 86 seconds Am I at least right about that?

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

no, when you download at home and see 200kb/sec, thats 200 kilobytes..... if it was 1,500 KiloBytes, its 1.5 megabytes/sec

having said that, check out the attached image.... screenshot while transferring files from mercuryserver to another server we own 8)8)

kamal i,m getting starting speeds of 1.1 Mb on rapidshare then its going down to 800 kbps, i think thats what he means

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

thats burstable speeds and can be attributed to several factors including the fact that the first few packets of data travel to and from the 2 machines at near lightspeeds, once a steady stream of data starts to come in, it trickles down to the max that the pipe will handle

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

I've got a 12Mbps connection at home and my ISP is going to offer 15Mbps down pretty soon. Don't know if I'll get it though. My brother has 15Mbps/2Mbps at his house and gets that for much less than what I pay. Bastard.

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

We got 384 KB/s (or 3 Mbit) as standard for ADSL in Belgium... And that sucks... (especially the upload capped at 30 KB/s and of course the limit in data transfer set to 20 or 30 GB per month).

I think I will switch to cable soon, as there is no limit for the data transfer.

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

My connection at home absolutely sucks. Its one-way cable. Meaning I download over a cable but upload over a 56K phone modem. I look out my window and see cows...ugh!

I dont know about that... Generally you seem to have a killer download speed at the start of the transfer because depending on your browser, while you're busy choosing whether or not you want to save the file, then where to save the file too, your browser decides to start downloading it anyway, then move it to where it should be once you've selected where it should go. The speed calculations are simply done wrong for the first few seconds, then look normal after that.

Data transfers no faster nor slower during the initial part of the download.

#797491Post 17 of 36

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

it is also a calculated average. and many factors can change during the whole download process. I do not agree that once you have s set speed you keep it. There are many hardware/software options which can reduce pipe to certain users, so more bandwidth becomes avail. There are just too many factors.

While I do agree with part of what you are stating i.e. it is true that IE will save a file to a temp location and then move it to the designated save spot that you have selected once the download is completed.

But I highly suspect that any of the browsers will automatically start downloading even while you are in the process of selecting the location (or even if the location is preset as in the case with FF) and even BEFORE the "Save" button is hit.

That in itself is a MASSIVE security risk if the file starts downloading even before you hit save cause a webpage can maliciously have a tiny virus / malware auto load and save on your HD even if the save as box pops up and even if you dont hit the "save" button.

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

Sorry Kamal but not it's absolutely no security risk.

Nothing can "auto load". If you start to download something and it starts saving the file, then you click cancel before you've picked the file, the browser deletes the file. No harm done.

Even if it downloads an infected file and it has a half done file sitting somewhere in your cache. Still no harm done.

Hell, even if you download a full file to your hard disc which is infected, and you don't do anything with the file. No harm done.

You can download all the infected exes in the world but if you do nothing with them... again, no harm done.

What I said is exactly how browsers operate, and have done so since as long as I remember testing this (Netscape 3 in about '96 or '97).

I've got 8mb at home. I love it...low pings and super-fast downloads. 8)

I still dont see how that helps. Granted exe based viruses need to be executed (though not all needed to in Outlook until MS released a patch for it) but what about even web related malware/spyware? I mean your browser pick sup stuff just by visiting a page which means web surfing in itself will be impossible.

oke, kamal, do you have direct optic between those servers, or what? teleport?

i got myself 10Mbit/s dsl connection, and the fastest i got was around 800kB/s from rapidshare, torents never go over 150kB/s, dont have idea why, except maybe bad swarms. and when i test speeds, the max i got was 7,6Mbit/s, so i think my ISP is playing with us...

but your speed of 10 MB/s?? where, why, how? cheers

^^ that´s the speed from a 100mbit pipe. 10 mbit is for wussies ;)

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

I did it!!!!!

when i reseted my DSL modem my torrents speed bumped to 1MB/s, i forgot to reset it after they upgraded my line, and of course, forgot to tell me that.

best of all, i find up that my line was upgraded 10 days after the upgrade, when i called support line to ask them how they are doing, after 3 months waiting for the switch...

what a service.... hehehe
shaw extreme cable... 1500kbps download, about 400kbps upload. its nice :)
That's pretty shitty, duder. 1500Kbps is only like 187.5KBps. 400Kbps is only like 50KBps and that's max.

Re: I just got 1.5 mbs a second, how's bandwidth for you guys?

I should be able to get those speeds too, since i'm a student (yes...faster internet for students here). Just have to contact my ISP and they can flip a switch and get me megaspeeds. On a much less stable network tho.
