Considering these babies are due to release shortly (or even out now, not sure), I for one would definitely like to consider one.

Maybe we should start a thread / recommend the cheapest hardware that can be put together in order to build a beast. Say between $1500 - $1700?

Only until apps designed to abuse the power of quad cores are released. I've fooled with a dual core machine on our network at work and its day and night as compared to the single processor machines.

this is definitely worth waiting for.

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

I have a dual core now (thanks Alexfish & Noah Becker), and it's a monster. I got an AM2 mobo to be prepared for any cpu upgrades, but I think I'll wait until the whole infrastructure appswise is also ready for it. No need for useless overkill at this time.

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

just get a dual core extreme..seriously quad core? its very expensive and i think there is no way in hell you are going to have problems with dual.

I agree but am looking at a minimum 6 year fix with quad core (i.e. not having to upgrade) as opposed to that with dual core

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

6 years? you know that's impossible Kamal the gear will turn useless on 3 years, maybe 4

#795245Post 16 of 25

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

6 years is a long time for a comp. But maybe the technology is finally here to last that long. Just like the automobile.

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

no way Lorn. as long as applications require more processing power, there will be bigger computers.

the question is. What's the final goal? Years ago, a quad processor computer was something only some university or government computer labs had. Now we are talking about getting one for home or office

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

Right now you can get the Core 2 Quad Q6600 for $848 over at Fry's Electronics and it comes with a free motherboard. I know it's not a complete box but hey, that's a pretty good start. Here are your choices:

EVGA nForce 680I SLI Abit AW90-MAX ASUS P5B Deluxe

I might have that Abit model wrong since it was hard to read the small print from a bad scan.

I have no doubts about that. I'm just saying at some point the technology will be good enough to provide sufficient power to the average joe for longer than a couple of years.

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

The system that I am typing this on right now is over four years old and still kicks ass. It's nowhere near as fast as my newest system that I built back in February of '06 but I still have no problems using this atm.

No bro its totally doable. My old rig is a P4 3.2 ghz with a gig of ram and a 37 gb raptor HD. I'm just gonna dump in another 1 gb and it should be good for another year at least. Heck its lightning fast when I installed vista and the 6800 ultra took care of all the eye candy.

So if a single core P4 can run (on its 4th year right now), the quad core boxes will be hardpressed to be phased out even with the best of apps, esp if they are designed to pull the best out of the system.

Huh? The average joe will use it for emails, web browsing, word processing etc etc... all that will quite happily run on a 1ghz Athlon with 512meg. That's 7 years or so old.

Re: Quad Core Affordable Box.

^^ True, we just upgraded the oldest PC in our office and the dude only used it for excel and email. the machine was a Pentium III 600 with 512 mb ram on a 20 gb hd

it was purchased way back in 99 iirc
