Anyone know who makes the best ones for a decent price? One of mine has gone tits up and I thought rather than just buy it a normal PSU I want to get a silent one which I can swap out and use in my next system (then the one that originally went byebyes will get the PSU that's currently in this system (oh no, I've gone cross eyed!)

Sooooo. Recommendations? I'm looking to spend around ?50-70.

Re: Ultra silent PSU's?

It depends on how much load you want to put on it.

if you own an intel core 2 duo, or an amd x2, with couple hard disks and a high or medium range video card, i would suggest you go (at least) for a 500w PSU.

i saw this one on overclockers.co.uk announced as ultra quiet. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-024-AK

Antec is my favorite brand. they say it's silent, i believe them :p http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-036-AN

or this OCZ  http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-018-OC

btw, if noise is a problem, have you considered switching your case as well? this one looks good, includes a 500w psu http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-003-AR

Re: Ultra silent PSU's?

Still weighing it all up at the moment. I haven't really factored a case into my costs as when I build my new system it will going into my rather nice aluminum case. Don't want to spend too much.

Re: Ultra silent PSU's?

Right. In the end I didn't want to wait for a supplier to deliver one as I got an important document on it that I needed to grab. So I did what I didn't really want to do and got an el cheapo Trust one for ?23 on my way home from work. Surprisingly, noise wise, its reasonably quiet. It should so the job until I know what my budget is for a new system. Then I'll splash the cash on that Antec I think.

Cheers.

Re: Ultra silent PSU's?

You looking for a Silent one or a powerful one ? To help keep your PSU (and internals) relatively silent (i.e. heat free), get a roomy frickin box. They maybe bulky, but they space things out (including IDE cables which can really help boost heat levels) and it helps keep your system run cooler and comparatively less noisy

Re: Ultra silent PSU's?

You definitely want a roomy box. Makes a world of difference in terms of ease of installation and heat flow and dissipation. Check out Enermax's top of the line PSUs. You rarely read anything bad about those things at all and they provide consistent power draws. Antec I would not recommend, unless you only want it to last about a year. Which has happened to many.
