I'm looking at the picture of Windows 3.1 and feel nostalgic :D

Precisely. The amount of window managers on the *nix platform alone will be well and truly above 50.
A lot of which have some very innovative design principles. A lot which take some interesting tacks for simplicity's sake.
Gnome's Human Interface Design (HID) guidelines makes for very interesting subject matter. They try and come up with a best practices framework which they recommend all applications follow on their platform to make the end user experience both easy and practical.
They pull it off very well for the most part.
Re: The Evolution of Desktops
Windows 3.1....I just set this up on a virtual pc with a xp shell and sound. I just thought I would play around with it since it has been so long :D
just set this up on a virtual pc
I hear that notion quite often recently. What is that virtual pc anyway?
Re: The Evolution of Desktops
It basically allows you to run another OS within your OS. Oh and it's free... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

Re: The Evolution of Desktops
That is a nice thing. Probably it requires a powerful machine.
Re: The Evolution of Desktops
Not at all. You can specify how much ram you want it to take, video settings...basically everything. My laptop is only 1 gig of ram and I am running Vista Enterprise along with Win 3.1.
Re: The Evolution of Desktops
