Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

is your USB port busted ? try a diff port. Also some USB hardware (if Windows auto installs is) needs a system reboot.

Also did you HD come with any drivers, you might wanna try installing those too.

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

right click on my computer and go to manage. check to make sure that there are no unknown devices in your device manager.... this will tell you if you have the correct drivers for your drive. if there are any yellow question marks put in the cd that came with your drive, if no cd, check the website for downloads. re-install the drivers, then try again. if all of your devices look good check out your disk manager (also in the window that is opened when you chose manage after right clicking on my computer). check to see if the disk shows up in the disk manager, right click on the disk manager and choose refresh to see if it then pops up. if you still see no sign looks like the western digitial drive is shit. now, its whether your usb drive is fucked or your drive. try plugging something else into that same usb port and see if it works... if so send that piece of shit back to western digital. most likely the raid card in the drive is fucked....

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

its good so far.. just put most of my music on it...a little slow on the transfer...i think it took like 1.5-2.0 gb an hour to upload...but, oh well, its good for storage and thats what i bought it for :)

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

dude that is very slow.... have you connected it to a USB 1.0 port ?? I just got one yesterday (to reformat my HD on my lappie) and had to backup about 75 odd GB. Did it in about an hour....

yeah mine is much quicker than that... put 70 odd gig on it and it was an hour or so. not sure if the fact that it comes fat32 makes a difference... first thing out of the box i format ntfs

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

I personally dont think the File System plays a big role in speed transfer (at least to this extent) unless its encrypting the data on the fly.

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

So does anyone here have recommendations on harddrives to buy? Was looking at either maxtor or a western digital essential edition or western digital premium edition...anyone have opinions on these harddrives and the difference between the essential and premium edition wds?

#771991Post 21 of 29

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

I'd go for a western digital..... regarding your Q above
The Essential Edition drive has only a USB 2.0 connection (the Premium Edition can also connect via FireWire)
which basically means faster connectivity but as far as I know, real world difference between USB 2.0 + Firewire isnt a wholel lot (yea you'll find technical data showing the difference but it wont be drastic in day to day use)

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

i just bought the seagate 500 gig firewire for 200.00 bucks. I have three of these drives all stacked. crazy stuff. Really a huge fan of seagate.

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

^^^ you bet. the true killer for me is my DV movies. Any digital video eats up your space like a damn virus. It is much easier for me to back everything up on seagate insteand of DVD. I will probably wait 1/2 year and either go blu-ray or HD-DVD for a more physical backup.

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

I just picked up one of the 250GB Western Digitals. In the picture, it looks like you can link several together. Is this a possibility? Or would each have to be plugged into the computer separately?

#772615Post 27 of 29

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

I am not sure if you can do that with WD. I had terrible issue with WD. So I am sorry I am not a fan. If you are referring to daisy chaining ... I have not tried with seagate, and probably something I would not even recommend. Microsoft is terrible with drivers, and there is a good chance that your USB/FIREWIRE port is going to be hosed by endless amount of redundant checks. I would keep it simple and just hot swap the one you need. It actually does not take a lot of time. I generally would not even recommend using it as a drive because of the external factor. It would suck to have crash of 500 gigs. (knocks on wood)

#772993Post 28 of 29

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

I don't think you can daisy-chain them together and access each drive. Wouldn't one of the RAID setups do the same thing and probably better?

Re: External Hard Drive Help!!!

Sorry, my computer knowledge is basic. What is a RAID setup?
