Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

Zen Micro. Proven better sound quality than an ipod (doesn't distort at the levels the ipod does), has a radio tuner, voice recorder, can sync with outlook contacts & calendar, removable battery, can copy music without a proprietary software (itunes), can be used as a file storage device.

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

I'm still rocking my Zen Sleek 20GB. Running strong and great battery life. Considering I usually listen to stuff 256KB and higher, I get about 15 hours of battery life out of it per charge. Woo!

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

I've come across the brand iRiver mentioned enough times on different audio websites, and a friend has bought one because he is anti-iPod  It's suppose to have good sound quality and line-in recording. Might wanna check it out.

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

Ipod! Some will want to call me a sheep, but the fact is I'm actually a convert, a former ipod-hater.

I had an iRiver H10, it was a major POS. After it was stolen it was replaced with a 30GB video iPod and I couldn't be happier. These things are the standard for a reason- the software and hardware are elegant and intuitive, as opposed to clumsy and frustrating.

In contrary to some points made:

 • you can use other programs to manage it other than itunes
 • works as an external hard disk
 • has more thingies to connect to, by far, and always will, especially superior car stereo integration, which is 75% of my ipod use
 • SQ is fine for my non-audiofile ears, but does this even matter with downloaded mp3s recorded and encoded in variours ways?

Most useful for me is the ipod's ability to quickly FF through long track such as the hour+ mixes we all listen to. I'd rate this as one of the most important features, there may be other devices with that, but I hated my old one for not having this feature.

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

I'm rockin a Zen:M Series 60 gig. I love it! My first mp3 player was an Archos Jukebox 10 gig. That thing was SOLID! It was huge and bulky, but it had these rubber things on the corners so I could drop it and no worries.

Then I bought an Archos 20 gig player that was smaller that the palm of my hand. I dropped it and Archos stopped making them so I got a Zen Sleek Photo 20 gig. I ran out of room really fast, so I gave it to my girlfriend who uses it was a recorder for nursing school, great recording quality.

Now I have my Zen:M and I love it to death. I get a good 10 hours of continuous audio playback and I have about 15 movies on it. There is a great DVD ripping program that will convert a DVD to a Zen compatible format.

Sound quality is nothing to laugh at and the screen is very cool.

Anyways, that my 2 cents!

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

I have a 512 MEG iriver that I bought specifically for it's line input for recording. I got it back when I had my residency, used it about three times and then my residency ended.

Now I just use it to check out new tracks and new sets without having to burn cd's. It's nice. But frankly i'd rather get an 80Gig iPod...and I will.

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?

Zen 20GB bought for $100 refurbed.

Took a LONG while to get recognized with drivers and the like (but also was on my old computer which recognized crap half the time  ), but once up and running worked great. Also doubles as a hard drive in a pinch...

Re: MP3 Player Recommendations?
Ipods are the best.
The have shorter battery life, lower frequency response and the signal-to-noise ratio is worse BUT... if you do get one, at least get rid of the original earbuds. They're rated pretty poorly and severely degrade the sound quality even more.

And someone mentioned about the refurb'd Zen... you can now get the 20GB Zen Sleek Photo for $69.99 from Creative. Not a bad deal. The 30GB Vision: W was on sale the other day for $219 but sold out quite quickly.
