Ok, I'm doing a fairly major upgrade at the end of next month (Conroe launch and huge AMD price cut), and up until now I have been dead-set on getting one of Intel's new Core 2 Duo dual-core CPUs. That was until nVidia released their new nForce 590 chipset. Although AM2 is nothing more than 939 with DDR2 support, this new chipset has more features than I've ever seen packed onto one Northbridge. Look here for details. Plus it has that crazy-ass EPP shit that automatically overclocks your memory...voltages, timings...all of it...done. All of that plus SLI.

On the other hand we've got Intel's Conroe. Blazing fast, yes...but it runs on the same old 975 chipset that Pentiums have been using for almost 2 years now. They are bringing out the new 965 (Broadwater) chipset, but the 590 makes it look like somthing out of 2001. Dual video is Crossfire only....and I piss on Crossfire. To piss me off even more, nVidia is bringing out a 590 for Intel (supposedly) at Conroe's launch, but it doesn't support DDR2-800....667 only. There is supposed to be a revision late this year, but there is no way in hell I can wait that long.

So, the question...should I get the sexy, brand new Conroe with a sub-par chipset, or the lesser perfoming AM2 (I would get the least expensive 3800, as it would just be a stop-gap) with the un-fucking-real feature set, and drop in one of AMD's true next-gen chips when they come out next year??

It's the same old shit...now or later. Conroe blows the doors off of anything AMD has on the market right now, but there is a good chance that their 65nm process chips will be every bit as good...or better, with a much better chipset running under it.

Thoughts??

I'd go with the AM2 because of those massive price drops and you know that you're gonna be able to OC that bitch to hell. It's cheap, easy to work with, easy to customize and there are other features in there besides just the DDR2 support. You know you want it. Go go go.

Re: I need some outside perspective...

seconds what beanz said.

just keep in mind that Intel fastest chips with ddr2 memories weren't able to catch up with amd using ddr in tests seen on the interweb.

you get a processor easty to overclock, a motherboard with latest nvidia nforce chipset, and ddr2 memory. priceless imho :)

I'm talking about their new ones. They smoke anything AMD has out right now.

Re: I need some outside perspective...

^ ^ But that's just what's out now. Remember, AM2 was more of a design for the quad cores and that's when we'll be seeing the utilization. I'd still go with them because they're so damn cheap and so much fun. It's amazing to see that Intel has to fight against a company whose gross income is less than what Intel use for R&D.

My thoughts exactly. :Bingo:

I think the AM2/nForce 590 future is brighter than Conroe/975X.

Re: I need some outside perspective...

It depends what you're going to be doing with the box. if its going to be running windows & used for general browsing for pr0n & sending scam emails from nigeria then the AMD is the best option. if you're going to be running it as a server or running some non-win based O/S then the intel is a much better option cause of compatibility.

Re: I need some outside perspective...

It will mostly be for games, but I also listen to all of my music from my computer. Other than that it'll be used for regular stuff like websurfing, disc burning and audio encoding.
