Re: wireless conection/router

go into the admin panel of the router via your browser and check for router status or status of the DHCP Table. It should show you which / how many IP addresses are connected to the router. If you have an exact count of how many computers should be connected versus how many are actually connected, you will know which one is an unauthorized access

Re: wireless conection/router

ok back on topic. You either should change your network ID key and/or increase the bit on the encryption on your router.

Right Click on "My Computer" and see your computer name. That way you can be sure who your computer really is on the network. It's odd that there are 2 "duende" machines on the network. Are you connecting to an actual server or is it a virtual server created by the router. Windows servers wont allow 2 machines with the same login names to log on to the network

you can also click on view devide details, check the IP addresses and match them to the repective machines by doing an "ipconfig /all" at a dos prompt and comparing IP's

Re: wireless conection/router

yup the computer name is duende....also the other computer wich is n longer in use was call it with the same name....but i format this laptop and put the same name.....but not sure why are 2 of them i think is because the ethernet serial numer or wireless cards........anyway.......thanks.....i should do that of compare ip´s

#631574Post 9 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router
but not sure why are 2 of them i think is because the ethernet serial numer or wireless cards
I assume you're talking about the MAC addresses of the ethernet cards. Those cannot be the same for any 2 pieces of hardware. Its like a digital fingerprint. Each ethernet card having its own uniqe MAC number. So no I dont think thats why it's showing you 2 computers with the same name. (Not to mention a computers name + hardware identifying serial are 2 completely different things)

how much are you willing to spend ? You can get a Linksys Wireless G router with Speedbooster for about $60 online (with a rebate)

#658233Post 22 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

thanks, kamal i know that, but i dont know how much will the shipping cost me from US to EU, Slovenia.

so i would rather take something here locally, so i can have warranty and everything else. price range is something like that. but arent those speedboosters just as the ordinary version, but with faster internal transfer rate, and some longer range.

if that is the case, i dont need those quirks... hehe

#658727Post 23 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

Either way I would stick with the Linksys wrt54g's since you can flash the firmware with aftermarket versions (sveasoft etc) and get waaay more functionality out of them (qos, ipv6, boost the signal, run vlans, hotspots, WDS).

#666299Post 24 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

oke, i got myself a Linksys WRT54GC and all i can say, soo small thingy, with so many possibilities.....

havent even discovered all of them. the only thing is that in my room signal for wireless is weak (occ. trouble connecting), while in a room 3m down the hall signal is allmost perfect.

no idea why is that.. thanks god i have a cabel....

go to sveasoft.com and grab their firmware, it allows you to boost the signal by up to 900%

dang I had absolutely no idea you could do this

#668858Post 28 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

yeah, it is possible, but you have to pay for theirs firmware.... and of course it is not easy to install either.... and you risk blocking your router....

Re: wireless conection/router

risk blocking my router ?

#668946Post 30 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

No they have a firmware that is available to the public as well, its only the development versions that you have to pay for. Here's a link to the publicly available firmware: http://www.sveasoft.com/modules/phpBB2/dlman.php?func=select_folder&folder_id=14

Here's the ones they make you pay for: http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/

Keep in mind this is all under the GPL, so what sveasoft is doing by charging for it in the first place is questionable.

FYI there are many other people doing this too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G#Third-party_firmware_projects

And he was referring to "bricking" the router. Basically as with any device that you reprogram the flash on theres always a chance (be it because you selected the wrong version or somehow interrupted the programming) that you can brick it, or make it useless. I have a total of 4 linksys routers all of which have been re-flashed many times (when new versions become avail) and have never had a problem. Even if you do lock it up there a procedure on how to bring it back, trust me the additional features are worth the risk (if your a geek like me)

Note: if you do run the sveasoft firmware disable spanning-tree if you are using this as your gateway router w/ Comcast since the router has a problem getting an address when its on.

Looks interesting but I'm still trying to figure out what more dd-wrt does? It looks like the configs are all done from a prompt. With sveasofts things like vlan configs are done from the web page (though you can still use a terminal).

I started using sveasoft a while ago because WDS was non-existant with the others at the time. I see dd-wrt now has it now but I'll probably stick with the path that i've gone so far.

I dont wanna register to download it, do you wanna email me the software sunny ? kamal@mercurynation.com

I'm using the WRT54GS (forget my firmware version - if that makes a difference in using this firmware)

#672978Post 35 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

^^^ They are all posted by some very nice person here: http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/

Like I said what sveasoft is doing is questionable (by charging people for GPL software) so guys like above have made it available the way it should be.

Be sure to match your version (on the bottom of the router is a v1-4). If the firmware is specific to that version that is.

This is probably the one for yours: http://wrt54g.thermoman.de/FreemanBasic_V1.0.4_wrt54gs.zip

Re: wireless conection/router

Cool. Oh yeah I should probably tell you that once you flash it the username might not be blank anymore (can't remember what version this took place)- its going to require the username 'admin' and then whatever password you had set on it.

Report back on how you like it or if you have any questions.

Re: wireless conection/router

ey mate....i just bring my computer to my friend house..he has this "switch" where i can connect my compu also to the internet truth his internet connection....the problem is that i cant download from slsk....

any ideas?

this is the switch of my friend and i have no idea of how to configure it...as is not a router i guess ?....

#685874Post 39 of 61

Re: wireless conection/router

you cant download from slsk ? Usually you cant log onto the console of a switch, it's pretty self automated. His switch must be connected to his router, which you will need to access to ensure that the ports that slsk is using are not blocked.
