Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

before soulseek and Napster I used a great great website called AudioGalaxy. That shit was awsome! Neat blue site with white and yellow lettering. I remember those days. It was around '98-'99. I hooked up my entire office / company with the "satellites" you would need to download from various ftp's and stufff. Thats when I started collecting most of my 80's tracks and found great sets from Digweed / Sasha.

Good times.

Audio Cassette...

Used to record my favorite tunes off the radio and make my own mix tapes. I think I got my frist kiss 100 set from here. What a night that was.

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

Cassette Tapes... I use to tape old school mixes off the radio here in Indy.

Back in the day when Flavor Flav was kind of a hard ass and not a T.V. celeb.

I can still remember the 1st time I saw a dual deck tape player and that was the shit!

Thanks, that was fun remembering that time!

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

so... in a few words, everyone of you are soulseekers now or what?? what about dont let the vinyl die and stuff like that?. Its not like i dont download from slsk, in fact most of my tracks are from there, but a few weeks ago i was mullered by some of you because i do that.

ps:before the internet i wasnt really into the music, so i used to buy pop/rock/rap/hiphop/dance/etc music, everything that were available in stores.

I used to actually pay for my music as well...i found this guy on ebay from turkey that had tons and tons of live stuff....so i would pay him like 2 or 3 bux for a cd....thats how i got all my stuff till i foound about audiogalaxy in 2001
so... in a few words, everyone of you are soulseekers now or what?? what about dont let the vinyl die and stuff like that?.
no, not everyone.

i feel very strongly about not downloading edm releases to play out. the only things that i download (mostly from slsk) are live sets, rare/out of print stuff for my own personal listening (not playing publicly), and tracks that i have recently purchased on vinyl that i'm waiting to be delivered.

i don't agree with downloading tracks for free to play out in public. there are plenty of pay sites for that.

#602550Post 18 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

No SLSK here. With becoming a post whore and work, I have just enough time to grab some sets off [ms]. Not into d/l copyrighted music. I work to buy the music and they work to give me music to buy (great circle imo). ;)

#602558Post 19 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

Ahh, before MS etc I used to sit up late at night for the Essential Mix (back when it seemed that most weeks was a decent dj as opposed to now when I never tune in). I have loads of old EM's, all on cassette with the inlay card for it that Mixmag used to provide (remember those!)

Now I am in the same boat as you lot - too much to filter through, most of it gash to be honest. but it's worthwhile when I find a set I really dig i.e. Nick Warren's JustMusic March 2006 mix awesome

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I used to go to Tower Records on Newbury st (Now its Virgin)here in Boston almost every Monday night at midnight cause thats when the new cds would come out .I'd Blow half my paycheck at the time on cds.anything on Global Underground I bought. Those Mdma mixes from Dj Scribble & Anthony Acid All the old Ministry of Sound Annuals back when boy george was putting them out and when Tall Paul played good stuff. Then I'd say around 98 I found Napster and ever since then i was hooked on Downloading from the internet. After Napster shut down I switched to Audiogalaxy. From Audiogalaxy I went back & fourth between Limewire & Kazaa. Now It's Slsk.I hardly ever go to Virgin to buy cds anymore unless its something I really want.I'll download it first off of slsk the buy it in the store.Man some of these new compilations are some damn Expensive.I got lucky I bought Global Gathering Godskitchen for $10 but when that first came out it was $32.99.I've even seen some cds for $35.99.gad damn imports kill me.

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

back before all that stuff. i didn't listen to electronic music. I was into very avant guarde musics. John Cage, Stockhausen, O'Rourke, Zorn, Riley, Reich, Glass.

I didn't get into computers till 98. And still didn't know about napster and all that until 2000.

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I'm a little late, but here I go...

before internet --- made tons of mixtapes.

after windows3.11 & internet ---

warez & doom over LAN. (collected and made custom WADS with NIN music, etc.)

spanned shitloads of floppies using winzip to copy pirated disks.

played with fractals and cool visuals like acidwarp, etc.

did nothing for music except play with shockwave jukeboxes' and watch REAL media live shows like Beck (totally blew my mind at the time, anyone remember rocktropolis???).

Bought all my CD's and had a portable CD player with casette adapter. Eventually got my first MD player to make those mix tapes last longer with better quality.

mIRC chat started to become a thing over my 14.4 modem. Started my first smut collection.

you can go on and on with this subject...

#602781Post 28 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

Before Audiogalaxy came into my life, I bought more records than I do now just because I get enough live sets I can listen to and enjoy. Without these opportunities I bought more mixed compilations than I do nowadays and spent a lot of money to buy live recordings from E-Bay. With the knowledge I have today, I would love to kick every single seller on E-Bay in his rotten butt for what they did (and still do).

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

the internet was my sole enabler for pursuing electronic music. without it, i'd probably still be listening to jazz. (not to imply that my switch from electronic music to jazz was a progression or anything, just that that's what i was into before i got into this stuff)

#602803Post 30 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I used to buy cassettes and between me and my mates we'd tape and trade the essential mixes, like Greg said back when every week you'd get a really good DJ.....Still got a case full of them and the Mixmag inlays!!!.......That and living in my local record store for the best part of 97 - 99......

#602829Post 31 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I never got into audiogalaxy, I remember it being available however I used something called scour - best p2p program ever, as a result it was shutdown in a matter of months. My buddies used to go record shopping and pickup mix cd's for me. One of my first mix cimpilations was Chris Fortier - Trance America, great CD (Mara - Far from Grace mmm!!!).

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

i bought cds...tons of them. i remember having to pay like $30 for seaman's renaissance awakenings set. i still buy piles of cds, but its mostly jazz and artist albums. the market is flooded w/mix cds and there aren't too many worth buying IMO.
there are so many radio mixes and promo mixes that i just don't have time to listen and appreciate that many.
i guess its better to have too much music out than not enough...

#603060Post 34 of 38

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

The only source of music for me when I started getting into EDM was audio cassettes and the Essential Mix, like the other audio cassette fans I still have loads of C120s kicking around my house and depsite the fact that I don't have anything to play them on I just cannot face trashing them:( My best investment was a hi fi with a timer so no staying up to press record...Happy Days:D

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

i really started downloaded around 2003, before that was all cd's...i still buy cds but i usually dl live sets you cant buy anywhere.

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I bought lot's of cd's too, then I used a little app on mac called Hotline (which was eventually released for PC as well). It was through there I discovered Sasha and Digweed, and never looked back!

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I spent shitloads of money on CD's which are now getting dusty in the attic. Yeah well, don't listen to Sonic Youth or Nirvana and such anymore...

Re: what did you do before internet, SLSK...etc DOWNLOADS

I started with cassettes .. recording from the radio even .. dont miss those days, then switched to cds .. still buy most cds as they come out .. i'm not a fan of burnt cds, i prefer the real deal .. with the case etc .. the only thing i download and burn to cd is live sets which sometimes is better than the cds put out anyhow
