go here http://www.microsoft.com//windowsxp/mysterysolved/corp/default.mspx

click on the picture of the usb key, it asks you to enter the usual information, then it asks you 4 questions at the bottom. the answers are...

 1. 2
 2. True
 3. True
 4. True

the only catch is the usb key comes loaded with a bunch of shit microsoft puts on there, which you can easily delete. so get yours while supplies last!!! 8)

Re: free USB flash drive from microsoft...

It costs them more to lock down the drives then it does to give you a proper one, plus they're not here to piss us off.

Trust me on this... they already know. I got a mysterious letter in the mail from then while on a 6mos. lease and I never registered the address with the post office. Got this after their last civil suit.

no brandon... when u sign up for that dumb USB, you fill in all your legit info and it probably even saves your IP.

Then when you're doing your next update from Microsoft, all they have to do is match your IP that you used when snagging this USB key with the one you're using for the update and if it matches and you have a "hot" OS distro...... how hard do you think it is for them to send you something in the mail from a lawyer ?

Its just their way to see how many home users are now getting free OS'ses cause corporate users dont need such flash drives.... (they probably have theirs from work anyways)

Re: free USB flash drive from microsoft...

I guess it's a good thing I filled this all out from work with my work info on all legit MS products ;)

Re: free USB flash drive from microsoft...

1st off, you can't autostart a script, like a DVD or Software CD that starts a program located on the disk once you insert it, from a USB key in XP and I believe that is also the case with 2K... this is a security feature that is built in to prevent people from coming up to your system and slipping a USB device in that would simply install a trojan, virus, etc.. There is no operating system setting that can override this. So, creating a .ini file that points to an executable to initiate and begin collecting info on your system is not going to happen unless you start it yourself.

If you think this is a conspiracy:

 1. Disconnect from your network
 2. Insert USB Key
 3. Once the OS finds your device, Close out the "What do you want Windows to do?" screen
 4. Go to Explorer and navigate to the device icon
 5. Right click icon and select "Format" using Fat32.. don't think NTFS would be an option, if so, select it. If you still think that those instructions are full of shit.. replace step 1 and 2 with:
 6. Insert USB device using a Work or School system, then proceed with 3-5.

Conspiracy resolved!
