Any recommendations on what video editting software is good?

Basically, so I can add effects, music overlays and so forth. (ie. stupid clips you find on the net)

Re: Video Editting

Avid. But its rediculous. it's what the Air Force uses for video production. They might have consumer products though. I think they're owned by M-Audio

Re: Video Editting

heh, was just about to say Avid too. great if you can afford the system cause it can do a lot, but it's ridiculous like hambino said

Re: Video Editting

Ridiculous is good... but, ridiculous as in what it can do, or as in its too complicated? or both?

#578446Post 5 of 24

Re: Video Editting

both, it's more than just software

That might be VERY costly...

I highly reccomend Final Cut if you are on a Mac, and would say that it isnt worth it to start learning Avid at this point if you dont know it already... it's on it's way out for many reasons (and runs for shit without the perfect hardware configuration not to mention it's not a very logical interface at all)

If you are going for simple and not a Feature length with lots of rendering to be done you can get Final Cut Express HD (it runs in SD too and its a good stepping into editing intro which will get you ready for final Cut Pro should you wish to upgrade (it's a lot more $$$$ so if you are just starting out you might want to hold off on spending until you are at the point where you know how to use the more advanced features) Let me know if you have any questions....

and as for Sony software.... it's not and won't be something that will be an industry standard so if you are looking to grow in editing etc, you'll end up having to learn Avid or Final Cut anyway...

and these 2 programs are good but more for animation and effects than for linear editing...

Re: Video Editting

mike beat me to it... having worked that end of the media spectrum final cut is the way to go imo. granted, it is a mac program but i really don't know any serious people in the business editing on a pc.. in fact i don't any, period.

Re: Video Editting

Yeah, I build and support video editing suites and laptop mobile editing setups for work and we have a fleet of laptops for this purpose, the requests for Final cut laptops is much larger and growing above avid PC laptops... Moving forward I would LOVE to never have to deal with Avid again (as a program and as a company, they are backwards and their support sucks even in the ordering and shipping department which is retarded)

bottom line, if you are indeed serious about this then you'd have to be an ass to invest in anything new on the windows platform... Final Cut is structured into the OS perfectly and there arent a million different configurations or conflicts as far as routing and external hardware goes...

Hooking up a deck or even an external FW drive on a windows/avid machine requires a very specific setup that is limiting to the rest of your system and you have to reboot after plugging new things in half of the time, and then again after capturing in order to view/edit... the list goes on, but essentially unless you like headaches and a pain in the ass don't go there.

Final Cut doesnt come with systems, it is pro editing software...

Final cut for intel macs is in final beta stage currently (thats why the power machines arent out yet (powermac is no longer called power cause the processor is no longer a powerprocessor it's intel) They will likely all be released in May or June...

The new mac mini is yummy..,
and these 2 programs are good but more for animation and effects than for linear editing...
any digital editing is non-linear ;)

I'd recommend premiere if you are looking to just do something simple. Its pretty easy to learn and does everything final cut does..... unless you are working with HD or need crazy codecs. Premiere is making ground with each version... people just like to shit on it because of preconcieved notions based on prior versions.... its come a long way though. I personally use it for editing and I know many other studios and professionals alike that have it in their pipeline....

I've used avid, final cut, vegas, premiere, media100... pretty much all the major editing apps quite extensively and they are all basically the same.... Video editing is video editing. Pretty cut and dry.

There is a free version of avid on their site http://www.avid.com/freedv/

And you can download a tryout of premiere off http://www.adobe.com

Re: Video Editting

I am working on PC. So many of those options are ruled out. Do alot of these "simple" programs have FX and that sort of thing already inbuilt?

Re: Video Editting

once i just found out that the entire film "Oh Brother where art thou" was all edited on macs running final cut pro...i knew it was one of the top programs for editing...I just wish I had a mac so i could use it. They are apparently not going to release a windowns version.

Right now for my video editing, I use the program that came with my computer, it's called. InterVideo WIN DVD Creator. Not bad, but it tends to crash a bit.
