Tried to update the software (iPod, not iTunes). Is there something you need to do to make it actually update? Right now the dame thing is totally unresponsive except to show me a little folder with [url]www.apple.com/support/ipod[/url] on it. I've tried doing the stuff suggested at that web site, and I get nothing.
Anyone have any wisdom?

do a reset on the software but make sure you have your music backedup because they will get delted in the process

I'm trying, but I kep getting an "ipod service error" on my computer. Computer is behaving badly in general, may have to just restore everything and start from scratch...

Sometimes the folder icon means there is a hard drive error.... did you do a manual reset on the ipod? The software updater needs to be downloaded and then actually run manually... it's in the apps/utils/ folder on a mac. PC unsure

I got the same problem and they told me at Mac that the hardware was f**. I had a little accident with it I must admit. Had to get a new one. Hope is not your case.

My ipod is doing the same thing. The battery has turned to shit and itunes doesn't even recognized it anymore. Never had and accident with it and my computer is top notch. WTF Apple?

My ipod has a habit of pausing its self. I've already returned it once to the mac store and had it replaced. Now it has a new problem. It seems to me that there are just a bunch of bad apples out there (no pun intended).

Mine died too. And I didn't buy the applecare, so I'm totally fucked. I might just use my renters' insurance to get another one, but there's a hundred dollar deductible. I had it, and this was a version 4, for just over a year. Bastards. Of course, I'll end up getting another one tho...

I got my Nano right before NY and recently successfuly updated it as it was recommended. No problems so far.

Man, it always seems like people have more problems with Ipods than with other music players, but that just might be because of the pure numbers that they produce, and the fact that Apple is totally price-gouging everybody by using cheap parts and pocketing the difference....
Have they at least increased the warranty length for their players? Or do they at least have a replaceable battery now?

^no, the problem is the fact that they're engineering their products with consistent fault. the bad batteries that aren't replaceable, for example.

they got away with it too for quite some time in the beginning until the CAL was settled last year...and all Apple did was extend warranty service for a year on 3rd generations and give a $50 voucher on future products to those who file a claim.

just like any other electronic. seems to be hit or miss. my ipod has had issues specifically it it stops playing after 2 mins. exactly & requires that play be hit in order to continue the track/set.
took it to ipod store once cause battery was acting funky. but the ipod (thankfully) has been working 2 years as of this month & still functioning....
