Hey all just got a lap top yesterday and it's fantastic. u c i have this desktop that is slow as anything and does not have a cd burner so i thought to myself a laptop would be great cause i can take it with me everywhere etc. it's a pentium m 1.73 processor, 512 memory 80 gig drive and 15.4 inch wide screen. also has dvd burner etc a really good graphics card as well as a sound card. anyway my question is this. i have some files on my desktop, how do i move those files into my laptop. i know it's through networking but how do i do it. is there a cord i have to buy or a programe that i need to do this. i can't burn these files onmy desktop cause i have no cd burner on my desktop. can someone please help me out. i just need to move some music files and a couple programs from my desktop to my laptop. thanks alot for any advice :D

buy a wireless router and network your home connection, you could also buy a crossover network cable, directly connect your desktop to your laptop from your ethernet jack, connect to your desktop from your laptop and download the files (you will need to move all the files into a folder and share that folder so that you can access that folder when you login from your laptop)

get a wireless router, you can hook youre pc and portable to the thing, it will be great to get on the internet from where ever you want aswell. you won't be able to live without it again thrust me.

i just set up my wireless router to connect all my cpus together. not that hard, just have to mess with a few settings to get it right.

i was gonna get a wireless router the other day so i could share my internet between my desktop and laptop. One thing i've seen recently is a usb adaptor, so you don't need to take your computer apart to install a wireless network card. But i was wondering if anyone knows if a wireless network card allows quicker access than a wireless usb adaptor?

Not really. What does make a difference is which protocol you are using. "B" runs at 11Mbs while "A" and "G" run at 54Mbs. I think there is also "G with speedbooster" which IIRC runs 35% faster than standard G.

The wireless g, g with speedbooster etc is not faster than whatever comes out of your wall. It only allows faster speeds for sharing files between comuters themselves - most people don't do this and it's kind of a scam of marketing. You cable internet provider provides a speed (most likely way less than 54mbps) that is the max speed you can surf. If that is all you will be doing, you don't need the speedboster g (though the range on the routers can be better)

Well all u say guys is perfect ..but i dunno how much a wireless router would cost but it would definately be more than a cable going out of ur desktop network card to ur laptops network card and thats it m8 ..ur done in 5 mins :)

imo, having a laptop without wireless internet is a waste of money. a wireless router + usb adapter set me back 65€ i've got a really nice deal. it's from sweex it's a dutch brand i think. but it works great imo. i've looked into us robotics aswell. it has some good reviews too if you upgrade the firmware. and on the us robotics you can share your printer aswell.

indeed...wireless is really the way to go and I'd probably go up with a 'g' minimum, as the speeds are there enough but also the connectivity range should hit throughout your house OK...

Routers and cards (or adapters if you prefer) if you shop hard enough are cheap...shouldn't probably run you more than $50-$60 between the 2...

Thanks for all your input guys and gals. i just went down to the shop and bought a 512 mem stick. all i need it for was to get my stuff of my old computer. i can't be borthered with changing my computer config etc plus this was cheaper and does the trick :D. thanks anyway to all of ya love u all 8)
