What a title bout fight.

This will be the future of our high end media players, and boy is it a fight over two different formats. On one end we have Sony Corporation & Royal Philips Electronics (Blu Ray), and on the other we have Toshiba Corporation & Hitachi Corporation (HD DVD). I have provided some neat links for you guys. The first two are right from the mouth, the last two are great resource sites. Great stuff.

http://www.blu-ray.com/ ( all the blu ray info you can get )

http://www.hddvdprg.com/index.html ( all the hd dvd info you can get )

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000623059130/ ( neat side by side )

http://www.hddvd.org/hddvd/ ( current news )

who do you think will win and be crown'd the new format?

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Man if it wasn't for John C Dvorak murdering this topic to death in each PC Mag issue, I'd probably have read into it some more....

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

dang that third link does look juicy, am gonna read up on that some more but from the brief skim of the tables..... looks like Blu-Ray's gonna be the way ahead

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

though I still dont get it....... size-wise.... what woul d be the size difference of an 8gb disc at 1080i ?? twice ? threee times ? However irresepective of what wins.... you know that this technology will push Plasma's / CRT's even more into the forefront (dunno about DLP, havent' read much on it of late)

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Hope we see some multi-format dvd writers in the future.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Most likely Blu Ray will be the winner because of its inclusion on the PS3. MS is planning on going with the HD-DVD for their next gaming system but far after the PS3. Also many Hollywood studios are already backing Blu Ray instead if HD-DVD.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

i hate Sony. i just read about all thier protection. fucking cocks. one of the main reasons ms is backing hd-dvd now. which is kinda cool in my book.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

hd dvd may win out simply for having a familiar name, as pretty much everyone knows what a dvd is.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Fuck blu_ray.

I'm sick of sony formats, they suck almost as much as their products. Hopefully blu_ray goes the way of the beta_max.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

^^^ that would be so rad. fucking cock suckers. they were so "coooo-ckey" with beta. that is what killed them.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Blue Ray discs can store 50GB max and HD DVD 30, right? When I think about what a double layer DVD-R costs here, I am sure this will take some time until it´s affordable no matter which format will dominate the markets. The format won't have a chance in Europe just because of having a record medium for HD-TV as this is not really an issue here. Only a handful of programs are already broadcasting in HD-TV quality and the devices to watch HD-TV are still pretty expensive...it´s no mass market yet and it will take years even to become a sub-standard only. Maybe the World Chamionship in Football next year which will be broadcasted in High Definition quality will give the HD technology a boost..we'll see.

Those discs would be awesome for storing music though. Another evolution step from needing several hundred CD-R to only 30 DVD-R and then maybe only a handful of discs anymore...nice one. :)

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Ultimately it comes down to who gets it out first and gets enough media onto their format. To a large part this comes down to whose console is more sucessful, sony with the blu-ray ps3 or MS with the HD-DVD xbox2. I think the xbox is being released earlier, so they might win there, but sony has it's fingers in alot of pies and it's previous consoles have been more sucessful than the xbox. I just hope it doesn't go the way that betamax went, blu-ray is the better format IMHO.

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

also there is a higher production cost for blu-ray. so ... cost is also a major factor.

#503611Post 19 of 23

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

cost and time are inversely proportional as far as technology goes so that should be a cause of concern for all of 8 months ;)

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

I don't care who wins as long as we get DVD players soon that can display 720p or 1080p. I've got an upconverting to 720p and 1080i DVD player already and it doesn't match regular HDTV broadcasts.

#503639Post 21 of 23

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

they have been talking about this whole blue ray and hddvd for two years now. you'd think they could get it together. but they are really just trying make us buy as much blank dvd media and burners as possible. fruking greddy bastards.

what tv / dvd player combo do you have ?? the reason it wont work is because its trying to assimilate data using algorithms based on what the image would "possibly" look like if it was a 720p or a 1080i image ... so the result will almost ALWAYS be shoddy..... unless you're gaming with a PS2 / XBox.....

give it a few years till 1080p DVDs are out.... thats gonna be a treat for sure

Re: HD DVD vs Blu Ray.

Microsoft and Intel already announced they will support HD DVD...so Blu Ray is pretty much fucked already. Curious to see what Sony will do now though...
