I recommend it. I looked at iRivers, but the Zen had more features than I wanted

"what happens when I travel?"
"read a book"
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I have a 5 GB h10, the hardware is very good, but the software is terrible. The player acts inconsistantly and there doesn't seem to be much logic behind the choices that were made. That said, it hasn't gotten in my way too much. Probably my biggest complain is the 6x FF which is way to slow to cue through long sets, while iPod apparently can tear through them.
The other drawback is that the US version is not a UMS device, but MTP and must be used with WMP10. That hasn't been a problem for me, but I would have liked if it was easier to use the device as a portable hard drive.
Here is an iriver forum, http://www.misticriver.net/forumdisplay.php?f=110 interetsingly, they just changed their template to a dark background too
I've said this a million times, but once more: if you care at all about periphials, especially car stereo integration, iPod KILLS EVERYTHING.
Good luck, I hope this helps.

No I was not drinking and I cannot spell and what business is it of yours if I was?
I am kidding. After reading my post I can see why you might think that.
Pickle, Creative good than? I might ask the wife to buy me one for the holiday at the end of December.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
Can anyone point me in the direction of a place that can give me simple, easy to understand info on all these types of mp3 player. I'm definitely getting an mp3 player in early 2006, but am not sure on an ipod, iriver, zen etc. Havent a clue which is better etc.
All I want is a player that can hold loads of tracks, that I can hook up to play in my car, that I can transfer PC music files to and looks good. Not that bothered about price
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
greg get an Ipod purely cause u can hold a fair amount of shit, buy an Idock for home and buyan itrip for ur car....
i mean i got a a creative zen micro last jan and it just doesnt hold enough tracks for me.. its only 5gig... gotta invest in a new one.
the iriver H10 is supposed to be good aswell.

The only thing about it that remotely bothers me is the sensitivity on it... other than that, the Zen had more & better features than the iPod and H10 that I compared it to. 5gb is really all you need. don't go for anything bigger
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I agree, 5gb is a good cut off. It forces you to be somewhat selective, yet holds more music than you have time to listen. It also allows for a smaller sized device, since I carry everything in my pockets, wallet/keys/cellphone there is enough crap weighing me down as is.
With the larger capacity players it seems like you wouldn'teven be able to keep track of what's on there.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I've had both an iriver and an ipod. I think the ipod is the better choice. Its playlist features and seachability are fantastic...its the only player on the market that you can search by artist. The only downfall to the ipod is if you don't have an apple then you need software for the pc to run it.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
its the only player on the market that you can search by artist.
If you throw the Zen out of the picture, then yes... it's the only player on the market that lets you search by artist
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
?? My H10 sorts by artist, in fact that is the only method I use to browse my files

Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
that's better :Bingo:
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
just ordered a h10... £134.99... BARGAIN!
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I have both an iriver (although it's not hdd) and ipod (flash) and I will say again that the difference in sound quality is huge. But I guess it's about what features are important for you...
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
ipod rocks my world
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I own an iriver mp3 cd player for 3 years now, and it's the best thing I ever bought.
My parents have an ipod each one of them, and I actually think it's pretty good.
Although the ipod nano looks like easy breakable imo.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I have an IPod and I update it with iTunes for Windows so it does work with both
The only downfall to the ipod is if you don't have an apple then you need software for the pc to run it.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I have the 20GB iriver H120. I bought it because it records via an internal mic, external mic or line in. I use it for telephone interviews for work (and therefore it was deductible on last year's taxes).
It sounds great on headphones or plugged into my stereo.
The interface isn't great. But I mostly play long sets, not albums, so that doesn't matter too much to me.
It also has an FM radio.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
iriver all the way......you get more bang for your buck and you don't have to worry about loading iTunes software. Plus, the battery life more than doubles the ipod, last I checked anyway.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
iPod. why mess with a proven winner?
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
iPod. why mess with a proven winner?
because it can't record.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I have an iRiver 20 GB player. I recommend it.
My wife has an iPod, and yeah it's beautiful, sexy, and all that. But the iRiver is pure function. Shows up as a hard drive, I drag and drop.
Holds a massive amount of sets so any variation keeps me from boredom.
The battery life is alright, I think it compares well to the iPod my wife has. She doesn't use it for large multi-megabyte sets, though.
Since I am a file-org type of guy - and not a meta-data org type of guy - I tend to like the file interface on the iRiver. I can get to any thing I want fairly quickly.
Get the iRiver, you get more feature for your dollar.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
a year ago i would have said iriver (h120) without a doubt. you got everything, usb cord, external mic, remote. then i lost it and thought i would replace it with another iriver (h320). not the same. battery life hasn't improved (although I have taken the iriver on a flight from ny to taiwan, so it does last), it looks horrible, and the picture capability though has great quality, is really slow and a huge battery waster. nonetheless, you still get more bang for you buck use wise with an iriver over an ipod (i use mine to record lectures). but the ipod, esp that nano, just looks cooler.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
ipods dont' have radios, line-in recording, non-proprietary usb cables, removable batteries, drag & drop media transfer, function as a mass usb device, or synch with Outlook. there's probably more, but that's what I can think of off hand
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
iAudio x5 for the win
MP3. OGG, FLAC,WAV, WMA Playback Voice and Line in Recording FM Radio USB OTG Color screen DivX/Xvid playback at 15 fps 20/30 gig Superior Sound quality

Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
I've got the iaudio X5 player with 30gb.....this is the bst player i know actually....the sound is really good the tool bar is good and you also had a line in for recording.... the only thing he is very eypensive for buying....
regards yamman
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
But the iRiver is pure function. Shows up as a hard drive, I drag and drop.
This functionality sets this player apart from a lot of the other players. Having to use iTunes to put music on the ipod is a drag. I prefer to work in the world of files and folders. And, from what I've read about a lot of the other players' software, iTunes is great. So, beware the software...

I use my iPod as a hard-drive. You have to enable this functionality through iTunes.
Re: IPOD vs IRIVER
Dig my ipod, don't know enough about the other one...
