Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

iv'e had to format my drive a few times .and start anew ( u was asking how many drives i got :D it now stands at four, i got one internal ,one external and a case i can put any type of drive i like into ( buying the case and a huge drive is alot cheaper than buying a normal external with smaller capacity ). get either kind of drive to back up ure music and whateva else you are scared of loosing and back everything up ureself before u send it off for fixing .. it takes years to build up music and programmes and everything else .. but it only takes a second to lose it all . for peace of mind back it up ureself .. that way u will always have a copy for if anything eva happens .

well, i recently found out that i had a faulty memory chip -- Corsaair XMS, it will be replaced this week.

but my windows is corrupt, and its driving me and my brother out minds, as we are both geek gamers. (im a SW freak at times, he a WoW) SW installed, but crashes a ton, WoW never even installed, dunno why. also im a pokerroom nut and there is nothing worse than crashing with a full house.

sometimes it simply shuts down without notice, just a instant shutdown, doesnt even close programmes. all of the programmes crash, either with a ""popup error message"" or sometimes just instantly shut.

its a dual AMD 64 bit machine. running windows XP home with SP i think.

constant ""the systemj has recovered from a serious error"" messages.

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

sounds like a bit of over overclocking (either CPU / Video Card).... I've had the exact symptoms with my PC and Far Cry.....

could also be a corrupt installation program.... if the errors have recently started, I'd recommend doing a rollback on XP .... if its from the beginning, re-install IMO

umm, first line i wrote.....

mike j fox preforming surgury is safer than me attempting to fix my computer. i would try to reinstall it and every pacemaker in north america would shut down instantaneously

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

indeed...sad to say, retailers like that tend to capitalize on moronic computer users with problems like yours, or similar...trust me I've seen the stories.

Overclocking would be step #1, but based on your expertise I doubt that's the case...but with all the problems you have, a System Restore is a good point to go (especially when the problems may have been recent/after you installed something), or a windows repair installation if you have a disc...worst case scenario if you have a disc as well a Windows full re-installation, which would take a little bit of re-working back around after, but you wouldn't lose anything really.

At the same time, a faulty memory chip would also probably start throwing things into havoc as you are mentioning...ps how do yo know it's faulty?

Take it from someone who's recovered from more crashes, corruptionsm and re-installations then probably anyone else known to man (I know all the re-install marketing scripts by heart now  )....especially since all the "usual" solutions never would work in my case too..and it typically was some deeper-down based problem.....it's only as hard as you set your mind to.

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

A faulty memory will give you random crashes and BSOD in windows, usually with a long string of cryptic numbers. Same with overclocking a CPU. Not so much a faulty video card. Faulty video cards either boot up and you see shit, or doesn't boot up.

If you are getting your RAM replaced soon, I would hold off till you get the new RAM, plug it in, and see how your computer runs for a day. If in the event the faulty RAM has fuxored your Windows to the point of corruption, you can repair your installation (assuming you are using Windows 2000 or Win XP).

Just sitck your Windows install CD into the cdrom drive, boot up with it. In the setup menu, there is an option for REPAIR. Do that, and see how your computer runs after. You might have to reinstall drivers for your sound card, video card, whatever hardware you have. You might have to reinstall your games or some software (though I wouldn't think so, unless some data files or saved games were corrupted during your random crashes).

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

sightless have you tried this to be sure its a memory problem?

http://www.memtest86.com/

that is a great free program you can write to a floppy and boot off of and it runs by itself

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

Stay away from geeksquad. I used to do DSL technical support and had a geek from geeksquad call up and ask why the ethernet cable he had wouldn't fit into the back of the computer. He was trying to shove the ethernet cable into a 56k modem. Apparently, all you need to know to work at geeksquad is how to push the power button on a computer.

i had the same symptoms you dscribe. As Kamal suggeted, it was overclocking, which I guess means overheating? But I took it to Geek squad for repairs and all thy did was ship it out to the manufacturer for repairs. I belive they fixed it be replacing the cooling fan. Works fine now.

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

I have a friend who works at the Geek Squad. Though they do charge people outrageously for some simple repairs, some of the people there are extremely computer-talented. My friend did my dJ web site in less than an hour, because he pitied my html design. :):):)

Cheers!

Re: Have anyone used GeekSquad- little help

does it do a memory dump with a blue screen? if so, the string of character should be a reference for you to know the source of the problem
