Question about my hi-fi

Hi all, I'm hoping anyone in the know on hi-fi systems can help me out.

I have a Sony RX707 system, about 5-6 years old. It has the usual stereo stuff. 3cd changer, two tape decks, an MD deck and a turntable.

I have had problems with it for about a year now. The cd player is very volatile. Most cd's will not play on it anymore, even if i use my cd lens cleaner disc. Also, when I do try to record a cd to minidisc most of the time it messes up because a) the cd wont play or jumps or b) the Md deck plays up.

As far as I'm aware the MD deck is in good nick but what can i do about the hi-fi?Is it worth me getting it repaired, if that is even possible?I tend to only use it for recording the kiss shows on it (the radio is fine).

Thinking of just saving up after xmas and getting a new one/What do you guys reckon?

Re: Question about my hi-fi

id say get a new one dude... it sounds like ur Lens is gone on the cd deck...

Mds are annoying now... used to have a player but opted out for Mp3s... the way forward plus u can hold alot more on a IPOD etc..

but it is nice to have a cool hifi... i got CD player deck and Amp deck and 2 crazy big speakers plus an ipod dock at home... it does the job bigstyle.

Re: Question about my hi-fi

yeah i know what you mean, been having similar problems with my sony hifi. it's been acting up for a while but everything seems to be ok now. my aunt had the same problem, it wasn't even that old yet, maybe 1 tear old or so (sony aswell) had it fixed, it broke down 6 months later again. so my advice get a new one, fixing it won't be cheap + chances are it will brake soon after again.

Re: Question about my hi-fi

Cheers Mr Big - it is looking increasingly likely that I will be getting a new hi-fi. I will definitely be getting an Ipod in the next 12 months, just have to do a lot of background reading first because I want my next music hardware to last me for ages.

Its annoying that I probably won't be able to get any money for my stereo though.

Goodbye MD deck! And MD player.iPod here I come!

Re: Question about my hi-fi

yeah to be honest man its so much handyer... alot of sony products suck for me... every MD player i got broke on me.. plus other products fucked up on me with the sony brand.

it depends on how much u wanna spend..my system cost about 1000 euro.. but its cool... 2 tower speakers 1 big sub a pioneer amp and Cd deck and the IPOD stand..

its handy for downloading sets, stickin them on the ipod and straight over to the dock.... :D

Re: Question about my hi-fi

I had a similar problem with a Sony mini hi fi system a while back. Do what I did, ditch it and get a decent set of separates :D Check out your local Richer Sounds store, my local has a listening room where you can test out the separates 8)

get a new one. if it was some equip you drop't some bones bones on ... perhaps it would be worth it. being it is 5-6 years old, i fork the money over and get yourself a new toy. 8)

Re: Question about my hi-fi

Cheers for all the info guys, I suppose my next question relates to ipods.

Anyone know of a site where you can get all the info on ipods etc. I mean, what is an iRiver etc and which is better?I have been on the apple website but it seems that there is only info on there about its specifications.

Anyone know which one is better, and what kind of extra equipment I need (i.e. pc, any leads, stereo?)

Really it depends on what you are looking for. Each product has its strengths. I would do a search for mp3 player comparison. RE the iRiver, it another company that produces mp3 players ( http://www.iriver.com ). Personally I prefer their products because they are able to record and thats a big plus for me. But again it depends on your needs. What do you want your mp3 player to be able to do? How much music do you want it to hold? Is size a consideration? Do you want something that can play movies and show pics? Recording? Different formats like WMA and OGG? Do you need it to be waterproof (really iRiver has an accessory kit which allows yoo to swim /dive while listening to your player)? Once you figure out what your needs are finding a player is cake.

if you want something to play music get an ishuffle. there is not a need for 20gigs+ of music, unless you travel the world in 24 hours. it costs about 150 USA currency, and works like a charm. no moving parts, no lcd to crack, no buttons to get stuck, etc.

there are such things as an iriver and etc, which are nice because of the record function. none-the-less, you still need a computer to share your goods. so this brings me to point one. you as the consumer needs to justify you needs and wants. it is so very easy to get off track and buy something you really do not need.

choices. and smarts.
