Hmmm... I may consider get a PS4 for my hubby for his birthday.. we do have a PS3.. not sure if it justifies an upgrade?

May have been Forza on Xbox, the graphics engine on that one is madness
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
FPS on a console is torture for me.. maybe because I stared on a PC a very long time ago and having to deal with joystick controls and low frame rates just kills it.
The other issue I have is that most of the new fps games lack depth and the learning curve is very flat.. lots of fancy graphics and theatrics but not much substance.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
COD has been getting a bit stale - The Modern Warfare series was great (and probably the peak games of what COD had to offer), but it's starting to get more and more like HALO (a bit too sci fi).
It still has great pick up and play appeal, but Advanced Warfare doesn't have the depth that the Modern Warfare and Black Ops series had offered in customization, maps and killstreaks with the multiplayer. I really hope Black Ops 3 has something good to offer, but it feels like they're going further and further into the future, rather than keeping it reasonably grounded with the stuff available.
The games that I've really enjoyed on the PS4 are Grand Theft Auto V online and both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline, but those aren't really games that offer the arcadey thrill and short 10 minute rounds that COD has. In Battlefield, a single round can last a half hour up to even an hour, but it's a lot more realistic and strategic FPS than COD has to offer.

single player looks better than multi imo
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
ID really need to create new monsters, that half burnt glued-to-a-gun skull monster has been around since D2 iirc
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
^ ye I think since John Carmack left they haven't really done anything all that amazing, but that original gameplay he infused into the engine still lingers, which is why their games still "feel" very fluid/fast imo
The only game I am really looking forward to is this
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is beautiful, brutal, and seriously ambitious | Ars Technica
the graphic's engine seems incredible

Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
After seeing some of the E3 videos I'm excited to see what Ghost Recon: Wildlands has to offer. It looks like a co-op Far Cry with a bit of Grand Theft Auto thrown in.
The Division also looks pretty promising - I like the idea of patrolling around a post apocalyptic Manhattan Island, competing with other player groups for supplies and weapon upgrades.
Finally, Star Wars: Battlefront looks absolutely sick - just hearing the unique blaster fire and vehicular sounds effects in a FPS combat shooter environment takes my childhood playtime with action figures that I grew up with to a whole new exciting level. I've already pre-ordered it fully - deluxe edition, season's pass ready to go on day one, and I'm probably going to book a day off to play it when I pick it up on the Midnight Opening.

Watching this gameplay...is like watching a freakin movie... its soo good. Gotta love the soundtrack.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
Picked up the new Call of Duty - Black Ops 3 and I'm pretty impressed. They went back to the pick 10 class system from Black Ops 2, added the specialist feature and put in a wall running feature (presumably as a fuck you to Titanfall's creators, who were members of Infinity Ward). The maps are pretty small, and the weapons are way more balanced than what COD Ghosts and Advanced Warfare offered. I'm pretty satisfied with this bounce back, but we'll see if the longevity lasts.
Picked up Fallout 4 today, and I'll probably start playing that sometime soon, but I'm not quite in the mood for another life draining game (my last foray into that was Skyrim, which was very satisfying).
Next week is Star Wars!
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
How much did you pay for it? I can't stomach dropping $60 on a fucking game.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
^^^ Then you spend another $20 or $30 to get all the DLC that releases only a week or two later!!! Video games have become such money pits. I do love them though, Star Wars will be epic!!!

?? I'm not sure what that is.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
DLC is downloadable content... Like new maps, characters, missions, etc... So you end up spending like 100 bucks to be able to play the game in its entirety. I understand if the DLC is released months down the road to keep the game more interesting, but a lot of the times its only a few weeks before DLC starts to come out

I went with the Hardened Edition and the season's pass - total came to about $145.00 CDN, which would be around $120.00 US.
But I know what you mean when it comes to the price tag that comes with these games - I usually put down $20.00 per week on a pre-order until the game is paid off and it doesn't hurt the wallet as much.
Yeah, and I agree with D.Williams about the DLC cash grab is bullshit - sometimes the DLC is in the game itself, just waiting for an unlock code. But from a business standpoint, it's to prolong the longevity of the game until the next chapter comes out.
Also picked up Fallout 4 on Tuesday. I have Star Wars and Rainbow 6: Seige on pre order, and will likely throw down for Just Cause 3 and The Division soon.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
So I gave the new Star Wars: Battlefront game a spin, and it's not going to please the more devoted, regular gamer. This game is targeted towards the casual gamer and less experienced players, as it's very streamlined and straightforward with the multiplayer.
Make no mistake, they do an incredible job recreating the Star Wars world - graphically it's a stunner. But the combat and gameplay is very simple compared to other FPS games like Battlefield and Call of Duty. The only thing that's waiting for more seasoned gamers is unlockable weapons and equipment and loads of customization.
For someone that plays an FPS regularly, it will be seen as a step back, or even a bit of a kiddy game (and they do play things very safe here - not a lot of corpses lying around for very long). They're going for the nostalgic factor more than anything else and the variety of gameplay modes won't give this a huge amount of longevity with the regular gamer crowd. This is more for the hardcore fan or casual gamer than anything else.

Couldnt agree more mate. Was looking forward to this aswell but it's a bit of a let down tbh
Not really a fan of the futuristic COD's so still on the look out for something new and decent!
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
I'm a big fan of COD, seems I will have to drop some cash on it after all

Ever thought about Rainbow 6? Might be a bit more up your alley if you're getting a bit tired of how far flung into the future COD's become. It's out on Dec 1st here in North America.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
anyone give Fallout 4 a go?
i havent played a computer game in a few years (WOW being the last) and ended up picking up the entire Fallout series a few weeks ago.. so i am in need of a computer upgrade now :)
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
I've got it, just installed it (just switched my hard drive on my PS4 to a 1TB), but haven't played it yet.
From what I've seen for the PC version, it's pretty amazing, very high res (which probably means a video/comp upgrade for most).

This is a project for next year for me. Actually I've got quite a few lined up, I also want to build a Coe i7 beast to run all daily activities on my home network, that's going to be a fun build.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
without wanting to hijack Kamals thread.
I'm not a gamer either. but i loved Duke Nukem and Doom. Largely cos i could play by myself. I cant play the online FPS games - cos I'm shite.
Are there any new FPS games i can play ?
recommendations please.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
If you're okay with a FPS and role playing game - Fallout 4 is likely you best bet. Huge amount of content.
Wolfenstein has also popped back up and has a decent single player game.
Really all the FPS games have gone competitive online multiplayer, so you're going to have a harder time finding FPS games that have a good or competent campaign game.
Also, are you going PC or console?

The hard drive switch is actually really easy for a PS4, so it shouldn't take you long to do. Just be sure to get a SSD drive for the replacement - makes it mad quick when loading games and booting up.

Good idea on the SSD but since I was considering getting a 2 TB drive into the PS4, I might have to stick with the standard HD.
Having said that, I did buy an Nvidia Shield over Black Friday as they threw in the remote for free (regularly priced at $50). Nifty bit of tech and considering it's 4K compatible, kinda future-proofed it with my Plex Media Server / Bluray collection. Happy so far.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
ps4 folks add me, picklemonkey. I just grabbed Destiny over Black Friday for $34 and have been digging it so far. I'm usually on at night from 10:30-12 after the family goes to bed. :)

Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
Been playing Battlefront on Xbox one and LOVING IT! Add me BoozyWoozy
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
just put together an amazing AMD PC a week ago.. installed Fallout 3 with all mods, playing through that now. New Vegas then 4 are next :) Quite an upgrade from only having a Macbook Pro since 2008.
i only need a good joystick then Star Citizen is also on the menu.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
I guess age is catching up with me as I'm not as motivated to build PCs anymore. My last build (Core i3 with 12 GB RAM) from 2011 is starting to show its age and while I was tempted to build a beast of a rig again, I'm considering buying a branded one from a manufacturer.
Though I'm tempted to make the plunge and get a beast of a rig like this one - Small Form Factor Gaming Desktop - Bolt 3 by Digital Storm PC - I can't stomach to spend nearly $3K (specked out). So likely going to go to Best Buy and buy a little more affordable machine like this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy-phoenix-desktop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-2tb-hard-drive-128gb-solid-state-drive-gunmetal-silver/4583952.p?id=1219773221215&skuId=4583952
Decent specs and powerful enough to be my Plex Media Server for years to come.
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
Can't wait for The Division. Didn't get a chance to play the beta, but heard and saw plenty of good things.

my husband does the same thing (has for years) and is responsible for giving many kids from our old neighborhood their first computer, then he started just donating them to organizations/schools. He's also lost motivation for it. He's learning/playing these days with a "Raspberry Pi" and xbian, kodi... ever heard of those? You might enjoy them also. :D
Re: I've never been much of a gamer...
I have heard of Raspberry Pi's but other than using the really small form factor for building things like wireless security cameras or an insanely slow backup server, I don't really have much use for them. Right now, my current project is to install wifi speakers all over the house (Sonos Play 5 Gen 2 in particular).
I just bought one speaker last weekend and I am simply blown away by the sound that comes out of this little box. Incredible.
Of course at $500 a pop, it's no where near cheap but that's why this project will probably take the rest of the year to complete.
