Thinking of taking the plunge and buying this sucker outright, anyone purchased it yet? I've read the reviews and other than the shittier than S5 battery, this phone looks like it's all systems go.

It is a non-removable battery no?

You like that operating system? That's cool if you do.

Re: Galaxy S6

Yeah K I thought you were over Android?

#1743375Post 6 of 33

Re: Galaxy S6

Yes I'm over Android as far as rooting and flashing ROMs goes but I give credit to Android where it's due

  • You can send just about any file over WhatsApp - including media (you can't over iOS)

  • Ability to drag and drop just about any audio / video format to the device and even use the device as an external storage

  • You can play just about any audio file and video file with Samsung's respective native players

  • Widgets

  • Google's native apps with new improved features are released first on Android (Maps and GMail are the ones I use most, even free voice calling on WhatsApp is only out on Android right now)

  • Even if / when the day does come that I decide to root and flash a custom ROM, it's miles easier and more effective on Android than it is on iOS (every rooting on iOS has made the device unusable for me)

  • I will eventually get the iPhone as well so I'm on the fence preference-wise, each device / OS has its merits for me.

Plus since I don't use the cloud for anything other than backup, being able to have immediate access to my digital life is irreplaceable to me. That's why getting 2 x 128 GB Devices and using one for photos and videos of my daughter and the other for my ever expanding music collection (and the reasons mentioned above) is going to be the inevitable future for me.

Re: Galaxy S6

Will it play nice with android auto? The S5 is currenlty have trouble.

#1743541Post 8 of 33

Re: Galaxy S6

I have no clue about that so far, I haven't got the S6 nor Android Auto in my car. Though between the two, I do prefer Apple's implementation of it.

Re: Galaxy S6

I haven't check out the apple version yet, as my life is sunk into google products. Cant freaking wait til Jeep comes out with their version of android auto so I can put it in my new trailhawk. Google's navigation is worth it alone.

I don't think there is a better app in the world than Google Maps. It has seriously found so much stuff that most navigations just struggle to, and I have used Garmin's since 2007 and even Apple Maps and they just don't find even street addresses like Google Maps does. Add to it the awesome address suggestions and it's incredible what this app can do. Only gripe is auto-reroute during traffic needs a major overhaul imo.

Re: Galaxy S6

Some Android users on XDA have been touting Nokia's HERE maps. I have it installed. Offline maps is nice to have,

This.

Sometimes I turn off my native GPS in the car for the phone. And Google comes up with a detour saying "I have found a 10 minute saving." And the ability to notice accidents on the trip ahead, fucking brilliant.

Waze

#1743852Post 14 of 33

Re: Galaxy S6

Waze was originally formed to be a crowd-shared navigation app so users can share info from their devices (intentionally and unintentionally) about traffic patterns, road-blocks, police-traps, police sitting on the road, speed cameras etc. But as a navigation app itself, it sucked ass. Granted it's been a couple of years I messed with it, but it just didn't cut it for me.

Given that Google has now purchased Waze and is likely tapping into the crowd-sourced data from the backend, is why Google Maps of late appears to have become even better about traffic jams.

Try Waze again

Now this I didn't know couldn't be done via iOS.. I thought it worked on both platforms.. will have to test it.

Re: Galaxy S6

How are you enjoying it?

#1746544Post 20 of 33

Re: Galaxy S6

I've only played with it briefly because I bought it for someone else. I do not like Touch Wiz and the usual baggage, I suspect the phone feels a little bit sluggish because of it, compared to my One Plus One running a Blisspop ROM. I'm trying to root the Note 4 which is proving to be more of a hassle than I thought. Physically I like holding it, it feels thinner and lighter than my OPO. I read the Note 4 has an amazing display but I haven't managed to enjoy that fully, the stock T-Mobile ROM comes with a garish red wallpaper that is killing my eyes

The S6 looks very classy though. I'm looking forward to checking out the Note 5 later this year.

Re: Galaxy S6

Holy mother on a pogo-stick, this has got to be hands down the best display I've EVER laid eyes on. 577 PPI is just madness. Photos and HD videos look INSANE on it. Front faving 5 MP shooter is awesome. I'm in fucking love :LoveYou:

Re: Galaxy S6

Congrats on your new toy :) This one looks much better than any other galaxy phone..

Its always fun to get a new phone... see how you feel after the honeymoon tho... I hear android gets worse the more you use it, but I guess with all that crazy powerful hardware it won't matter anymore.

Is that thing running Snapdragon 810 ? I read somewhere that those things heat up quite a bit

#1746675Post 23 of 33

Re: Galaxy S6

Thanks, still in the honeymoon phase and loving it, just looking at such a high resolution screen makes every interaction a massive joy. For the S6, sammy moved away from the Snapdragon's to their own Exynos processors. No problems with heat, but usual Tmo / Android bloatware is making the battery drain unacceptable. Updated to 5.1.1 and phone went fgom 75% to completely empty overnight. Totally unacceptable. Hopefully the release a fix soon.

Otherwise, its awesome.

T-Mobile bloat is really bad and I'm having a hard time rooting my phone.

Re: Galaxy S6

I bet if you love watching videos on your phone... then the Galaxy S6 is a must have.

Re: Galaxy S6

I did a side-by-side video comparison test using my S5, S6, an iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in pitch darkness using the below video and the results were nothing short of eye-popping. The S6 just blew everything out of the water. The extent of the deep blacks from the AMOLED panel mixed in with the staggeringly dense PPI bought out details that the rest of the devices just couldn't keep up to. The iPhone struggled to show blacks, showing the space backdrops as hazy greys and the iPhone 6 was the worst of the 4. Safe to say this device is going to stay with me for a very long time to come.

Re: Galaxy S6

i just ordered the new S7 Edge after having an iPhone since the iPhone 2.

after playing with the Nvidia Shield tablet since November with Android OS.. it completely blew my mind with the customization and the features of the OS compared to Apple's iOS.

also built a new Windows desktop in February so my Apple fanboy days are near over with the exception of my V5 iPod with my portable amplifier which probably wont be going away any time soon.. then again with the S7 SD card expansion (also ordered a Samsung 128 EVO+), who knows this may be my new one-device-for-everything.

Re: Galaxy S6

^^^ ddr!!! I made the switch last year to Galaxy Note 5 and I also had the iphone from the beginning and loved it, but man had Android come a long way, plus the screens on the galaxy phones is tops above all imo. I can do so much more on my note 5, and the simple ability to download from the default browser strait to the phone is something that apple will sadly never give up. Hope you like it, I bet you will.

Still on my OnePlus One, flashing a custom ROM update right now. Android rocks and feels much sprightlier than iOS. Never gets bogged down and no lag at all.
