Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?
^Nice.

A lot of Audi enthusiasts here. Good to see.

Jenks how's the bluetooth in the factory system? I've heard that quality is really bad for phone calls. Not too sure but is it able to stream your playlist from your phone?
I think sounds pretty great for telephone calls, and way better than the system that was in our Acura a few years ago. My wife calls me from the Q5 all the time via bluetooth and I honestly can't tell she's using it. You can pull up your phone's directory on the nav screen and on a display between the tach and speedo via steering wheel controls or voice command. It's not a feature I use (I hate talking on the phone in the car- plus all calls override the music, boooo), but she seems to get a lot out of the bluetooth in this car and didn't ever use it in the previous Acura or VW because it sounded like a speakerphone.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Yeah, the Bluetooth works a lot better in my car than it did in my old BMW that it replaced. But that car was 9 years old, so the technology was fairly new at the time. Things have definitely improved over time.

My car can stream bluetooth music but I don't use that feature because the streaming quality is not as good as using hard wire. When we upgrade the stereo, we will put in an external D/A converter for my iPod/iPhone. That will be higher quality than even the Audi Music Interface cable.

I don't even use the Audi Interface cable. Two SD card slots in the dash, dump music on the HD or play off the cards. Would like to be able to stream spottily, but not losing sleep over it.

Bluetooth 4.0 is great. I love it in my new Acura too. And even Bluetooth Audio Streaming is wonderful. Although for some reason, I can't get the album art to display over Bluetooth Streaming but it will when streaming over USB / iPod Mode. Need to figure that one out.

I don't use the SD cards or Jukebox because they don't support Lossless audio files, nor gapless playback. Absolutely unacceptable to me.

Bluetooth artwork is likely not going to work. On my Audi, you can't get Bluetooth song info either.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Just picked my car up from the dealer this morning. They updated my MMI software to version 0715-2. I've got Bluetooth music streaming with song info now.

Dropping off on Monday for stereo, radar detector, laser jammer, and dash cam install. Will report back in a few weeks when they are done.

#1708106Post 49 of 88

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Install is moving along nicely. Front door speakers are in, digital processor is installed, and laser jammer was going in this morning. Subwoofers and horns are next on the list, and the dash cam system will probably be the finale. Hopefully will be done in another week or two.
Dude we expect detailed picts, no exceptions ;)
Not much to look at right now, but they are getting much closer to being finished.

They did the front doors first, taking out the factory midrange and midbass speakers, made by Bose. The Bose midbass came in a plastic ported enclosure. See below.

Removing that enclosure left a very large hole in the door which had to be filled in before we could install the 8 inch midbass. We used some composite material that we heated up and molded into the shape we needed, and then backed it with some foam. Then the trim rings were built for the 8 inch speakers to raise them away from the window track inside the door. Obviously, the magnets on the new 8 inch midbass were much larger and deeper than the old Bose. Here's a look at the new composite baffle and trim ring: (you can also see inside the door some of the sound dampening material we added) We applied sound dampening to the outer door skin, and both sides of the inner door skin. We also applied foam tiles behind the midbass speakers to help diffuse the back-wave reflections. (can't be seen here, though)

Here is the speaker in place:

The factory door panel fits back perfectly with the new 8 inch midbass. We didn't even have to cut it.

We put lots of sound dampening material all over the car. Here is the underside of the rear deck in the trunk. The back seats are folded down in this picture. You can also see the rack for the new amplifier (the black rectangle frame hanging on the underside of the rear deck)

Pretty much the whole car has this sound dampening. I'm not sure yet how many square feet has been used, but it's a lot. Hopefully this will prevent any resonance of panels when the subwoofers are installed.

Got to go for now, but I'll post some more soon.

#1708590Post 53 of 88

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

More Updates:

Another couple of days, and more sound dampening. We have gone through 2 boxes of dampening so far, approx 80 sq ft. The front and rear doors are covered, along with both the top and bottom of the rear deck, and all of the trunk surfaces including the tire well, floor and sides, and trunk lid. We still need to take down the headliner and dampen the roof.

We have installed the HRT iStreamer 12Volt on top of the Audison BitOne processor. It is the white device seen in the pic below, with the USB cable sticking out of it. We will run a long USB cable to the front armrest for my iPod to connect directly into the BitOne. The iStreamer acts as an outboard D/A converter for iPods, up to 24 bit 48kHz with zero jitter.

The underside of the rear deck has been carpeted to hide the sound dampening and the amplifier rack.

A closer look at the Audison Voce AV5.1k amplifier. This single amp will power the full system with 5 channels.

And the subwoofer baffle has been started. This is the initial frame that will support the baffle structure. This is the part that actually bolts to the frame of the car. The baffle board will bolt onto this frame to minimize the number of holes drilled into the car's metal, and to also allow for removal of the baffle if I ever need to use the folding seat pass-thru.

The baffle is made from 1" baltic birch. We chose baltic birch over the the typical 3/4" MDF for better stiffness, plus we can use standard woodworking tools.

This is the view from the back door looking in.

And here's the view from behind the car looking into the trunk.

Subwoofers should be installed and able to play by tomorrow or Thursday, I think.

The dash cam will go in last, when we have the headliner taken down.

First thing, you should check which version of MMI software you have.

Go the the Setup MMI menu, and if you scroll through the options there it should tell you the version info. The latest version I'm aware of is 0715-2.

If you have a lower version than 0715, I would suggest telling the dealership you are having some of the known issues that the update fixes. For example, my stereo was making a loud popping noise as if a rock hit the windshield.

When I asked them to update just because I wanted it, they didn't do it. But when I gave them a specific problem, they complied.

You must be really itching to have a completed car. Looks awesome so far. By the looks of things, you're going to be absolutely thumping some tunes in there. What are the sizes of those subs?

they are Dynaudio Esotar 1200s.

im going to try them out for a while, but might replace them with a pair of 15" subs.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Yesterday was my first tuning session with the new stereo system. It sounds great, but there is a LOT of work to be done tuning it further. It will take me several more weeks/months to get it right.

We got the BlackVue dash cams working yesterday, too. The ability to view live video on my iPhone was extremely helpful. We tested out several mounting locations for the front and rear cameras. The front camera has such a wide viewing angle that we decided we must mount the camera in the center of the front windshield, below the rearview mirror. The camera is hidden from the driver's view in that location, but it's very visible from outside the car. This is a minor downside which I will have to accept. We tried mounting the cam higher up on the windshield but the rearview mirror stalk was always blocking part of the camera's view.

I'm really pleased with the trunk baffle installation for the subwoofers. There is no "box" with this type of setup, so I lost almost zero trunk space.

#1709813Post 65 of 88

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Got my car back yesterday. Everything is finished, but we still have a lot of work to do tuning the stereo.

Here's a look at the dash cam, now that it's been installed. I tried to put the camera up higher on the windshield but the viewing angle is so wide that the image was getting cut-off by the mirror support. I decided to put the camera below the mirror since the image was better. Fortunately, when I am sitting in the driver's seat I can't see the camera at all because it is in front of the mirror. So this location works out very well. I just don't like how visible the camera is from outside the car, but I'll live with it.

The rear camera is mounted at the top of the rear windshield next to the third brake light. It's completely invisible to the driver and it was very hard to take a picture of it.

The controls for the audio system, radar detector all went in the ashtray compartment. The sliding door can close normally to hide everything from view.

And the display for the radar detector has been hidden inside the rearview mirror. It doesn't photograph well, but looks great in person.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?
Dude this install turned our even more wicked than imagined. I bet you're having a blast with all the tech.
Indeed. Although, I still have a ton of tuning work to do and have not had time to actually sit down and work on it.

So far, I have only adjusted the crossover points and time alignment. Each channel has a 30-band EQ that needs to be tweaked, and I'll need to borrow my installer's spectrum analyzer for that.

I'm also thinking I might take the car back to them and get more sound dampening done to the floor of the car, to kill more of the road noise. That means all the seats come out, and all of the carpet. Going to wait a few weeks before making that decision.

The BlackVue camera is working great. I updated the firmware yesterday and had no problems. The iPhone software works pretty well, and I love the ability to view live video on the phone because it helps to perfectly aim the cameras where you want. The PC software is pretty goo, too. All of the videos get event stamps for the motion sensors and shock sensors, so it should be easy to find the videos for when things might happen, like a person hitting my car while parked. I got the Power Magic Pro so the camera continues to record while the car is parked. It shuts down the camera when the battery voltage drops below 11.8 Volts, so I don't need to worry about draining the battery too much. Overall, very pleased.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

That looks like a pretty packet you're going to put down on the entire gig. On that BlackVue, did you install it with the English version of the Firmware or the Korean? I heard that the Korean version is better in some respects.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Wouldn't "15's" drown out the mids and highs? It's not a very big car inside is it? Would love to see some more interior/exterior shots when you have time.

Silly question but if a car door hits the side of your parked car, would the cam see it? Is the cam in order to prove to the insurance co who's at fault? Also, are you doing anything to the engine? How many horses? Regardless it's a sick ride stock. A bball player at our sons daycare has one that's white with white rims - look like 20's . Smooth as f though
Wouldn't "15's" drown out the mids and highs? It's not a very big car inside is it? Would love to see some more interior/exterior shots when you have time.
No, they would not even come close. The horns are 113+ dB senstivity @ 1 Watt. Most subwoofers are about 85-89 dB sensitive.

The advantage of going with 15" subs would be displacement. The larger cone moves more air.

I'm going to stick with the 12" subs for a while, and see how they do. They are not even broken in yet so I haven't cranked them up too high.
Silly question but if a car door hits the side of your parked car, would the cam see it?
The answer is Yes and No. The cameras have very wide angle lenses, but cannot see directly to the side of the car. That being said, if a car pulled into or out of a parking space then one of the cameras would see the plate. The camera has a shock sensor, so it would tag the video at the point of the door hitting the car. I could then review the video to see the car pull in or out of the parking space and catch the plates.
Is the cam in order to prove to the insurance co who's at fault?
The primary reason I have the camera is for evidence in the case of a moving accident. I am a very careful driver, but if someone hits me then I want to have proof of who was at fault.
Also, are you doing anything to the engine? How many horses?
No engine mods yet because I'm only at 6500 miles and don't want any warranty issues. I think the engine is technically rated at 420 HP, twin turbo. The APR engine software takes the HP to 560 horses, instantly. I might get the APR tune done when I get closer to the end of my warranty.

Even with just the stock engine, the car is 0-60 in less than 4 seconds.

Compression horns in car audio are very rare, but very high performance.

I pretty much only listen to underground house music, which explains my presence on this board. 8)

The A7 is almost the same car, but with the hatchback rear. My car will blow the doors off an A7, however. I have a twin turbo V8 engine, vs. a V6 engine for the A7. I could race just about any car on the road (including exotics) and have a respectable outcome. My brother is a Porsche race instructor, and his modified GT3 that he only drives on the race track is not that much faster in a drag race.

 wow! Really!? Maybe post a video if you get a chance :). Your car is similar to the M5? That's really incredible. My friends dad had one we drove 160 in, it flew.

#1710743Post 76 of 88

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

The S6 will definitely outperform the current M5 in a drag race, although I would concede the M5 is the better overall car. The M5 costs $20,000-30,000 more, so it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison.

There is an RS6 available in Europe which is more on-par with the M5. We don't have it in our market, unfortunately.

Re: Anyone have one of those DashCams in their car?

Excellent posts Subter. Well done with the overall mods. Really want to look into that superb hidden radar detector. That's every clever where it's hidden.

I personally still think Audi's are a more valuable choice between all the other leading German ranges. Had a test on the S4 wagon a fortnight ago the exact one I wanted, but with the slow release of the 2014 model coming up, there are so many decisions mainly financially to consider.
