Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

I finally bought a Macbook Pro (Late 2011) after a long time wanting one....to cut to the story I have installed Traktor Pro , Live 9 mapped my controllers-soundcard and all working like a charm....Now after updating form 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 I had to go through TWO issues.

  1. When I restarted the second time after the update It reached to the gray screen with the Apple logo and kept loading for ages!! I shut it down 2 times left it for more than 30mins but no go -same thing....... Then Boot into safe mode run verify disk permissions and no errors were found..... boot back and again no luck....I finally got fed up and decided to re-install OSX which I did and the problem has not re-occured so far.

  2. What I noticed after re-installing OSX is that The WiFi signal has become very weak, I haven't been able to stream a 5 minute video where I could do before with no breaks...the only way to get good signal is to be withing 3 meters reach at least!!!! I have updated to 10.8.3 again but wifi signal is still weak.

Anyone experienced something similar?

I'm going to upgrade my router's firmware and see If I get any results....

@Kamal : Mate seriously YOU....never used a Mac? haha I was sure that you would give me a solution!!

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

Na dude, my life is so ingrained with Micro$oft, I don't really have the motivation to take on the learning curve with a new OS. That and the fact all the $ spent at setting up a Media Network at home that is all Windows based, it would take quite a bit to transform everything to Apple products.

But having said that, I do feel like I will at least take the first step by buying my first MBP (as I said above). Let's see how it goes.

Are you using QNAP at home?

I'm sure you will not regret buying a MBP...and trust me before you know it you will get used to the OSX.

I went to the Apple store yesterday and they run a few tests (wifi-hdd) and passed all the tests....now when I asked why my signal was weak at home even though when I had first bought the machine it was working fine he tried to sell me an airport extreme router!!!!!!

Finally I came home and my best friend (google) helped me find a solution!!! All I had to do is switch the wireless channel from auto to channel 3....others said channel 6 but it did not work for me....speed is back to normal now :D

I'm still scratching my head though because all other devices worked fine under the previous setting.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

No, I feel I should have, but instead I built a media server with 6 x 3 TB Hard drives. I didn't RAID them because standard OS level RAID can wreak havoc on the entire array if one of the drives goes bad. So I have distributed my media all across the HDs and mapped them over the network. Depending on my mood, I will either stream via VLC or WMC. BUT, having said that, I have seen how well Apple TV 3 works and I'm tempted to get an iMac, use the USB 3.0 ports and connect a QNAP like device to it and share that over the network.

But with a baby on the way now, I don't think that will happen for at least a few years.

I had a while ago but don't remember anything about it, all I remember is I much preferred WMC back in the day because of its TV Tuner capabilities. I haven't tried it recently. Any better?

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

Just started using it recently as a media centre & it’s absolutely brilliant + Free.

It can scan your hard drives & present your collection on screen, as in this vid.

You can also use you IPad / Iphone as a really cool remote for free without jail breaking.

If I may , what HD's are you using? And what kind of media are these monsters carrying?

Just so you know, Apple TV 3 will require your media to be in your iTunes library and your Mac open when streaming. There is no NAS-direct streaming-to-Apple TV 3 solution.

I'm using a mix of Western Digital and Seagate (the 4 TB is seagate). I wont specify on the type of media ;)

@ Feather - then it looks like Apple will remain out of my entertainment system is iTunes needs to be running at all times.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

Yeah it bugs me a lot. So I can only stream video formats that iTunes accept. .avi, mkv have to be converted.

I looked into systems like Roku which can run Plex but it requires the Plex software to be installed on a computer and be left on too. Synology has some kinda Video Station that can Airplay to Apple TV but it requires you to use a browser window or a Synology iOS app to select and play the video which kinda defeats the point (although that means you sidestep iTunes and can play more file formats that Plex supports.)

The ideal solution is a jailbreak like an Apple TV 2 that can browse media directly on the NAS and play them without iTunes.

^^ like jailbroken ATV2 with XBMC installed.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

This is why Windows PCs shine for network based media streaming, though Donny I will admit, I'm intrigued by XMBC

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

Kamal, check out the linux based version of XBMC called openelec. You can install it on a bare bones PC like a zotac zbox or Raspberry Pi straight off a USB stick, no operating system required.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2011 QUESTION!!

Wow someone managed to get Plex onto ATV3 WITHOUT A JAILBREAK.
