how is this substantively different than what apple offers already? looks are nice, but that can't be all that it's being sold to be. this can't be some trophy wife of the apple backcatalogue.

The hardware underneath is more powerful and the screen resolution is higher than an HDTV and it is super thin is it. Pretty amazing they can squash all of that into such a small form factor. Still way too damn expensive for me though. I'll stick with my Air.

That's what people said about the Macbook Air when it came out. The Macbook Pro Retina is a proof of concept that will eventually roll out to replace the Macbook Pros I reckon. They've already gotten rid of the 17" model.

I'm skeptical of the battery life, I can't imagine the battery supporting all that for a full 7hrs and 30-day standby.
I had planned to get an Air this year and decided to wait for the new lineup. Such a dilemma now!

^Yeah that seems a bit crazy. Maybe if you are just using the terminal and surfing the web. But no way could that last playing back 1080p video or any other type of crazy photo manipulation etc...but who knows.
They probably sprinkled a couple of pinches of Steve Jobs' ashes in each mobo and that gives it the power of the gods.

Well, this means I'll be keeping my 17" MacBook Pro with Anti-glare screen.
The new MacBooks have fewer USB ports, and got rid of the Ethernet port. WTF??? So you now have to use a dongle to connect to the CDJ-2000s. That sucks.

The Retina goes up to 500gb of solid state memory. The 250gb Retina book is worthless IMO.

Went to a store and fondled the Retina book. Certainly feels sleek. The Retina display is nice when you actually peer at the screen and notice how sharp the type is, not sure how often I'd be appreciating the Retina display if using it daily.
Can feel a weight difference when holding the Retina and the MBP, but the Macbook Air is still significantly lighter by miles (going by 'feel' since we know their weights).
Still stumped between the Retina and the Macbook Air :lol:

I love my 13" Air, it is the best laptop I've owned. The Pro is way too expensive and overkill for me, but it pretty badass. I'm going for thin and light with a good battery I can use for work everywhere and in a chair etc so the Air is perfect for me.

What do you use your Air for out of curiosity? Does it run fine for videos and streaming stuff over a network? Do you run Photoshop on it? I'm really stuck between the Air and Retina.

Yes it does everything I've thrown at it just fine. It plays HD youtube vids fine, I copy over 720p .mkv files to it when I travel and I can watch HD movies on it without issue there isn't any lag at all. I haven't installed Photoshop b/c I don't use it much but I'm sure it will work just fine.
Right now I have this browser, Skype, iterm2 with a few ssh sessions open, Spotify, VNC and VirtualBox running 3 VM's right now, and there are no problems.
I haven't had any issues with this guy yet on it being burdened to keep up, it kicks ass. Now I haveny installed Crysis or anything like that on it, but it plays MAME and Limbo just fine....

All of the Siri questions get sent to their servers to for voice recognition too btw.

If I upgraded the Macbook Air 13" (2.0GHz i7, 8GB RAM and 512GB storage), it's still about USD567 cheaper than the Retina which would have an extra 0.6GHz, the NVIDIA GeForce graphics, and Retina display.
I could live with those Air specs, most times I only have Chrome, Adium, iTunes, Sparrow, some Twitter app, MS Office, Keynote, and a video player open. I do use Adobe stuff but not on a daily basis for performance to impact me.
How much RAM and storage do you have in your Air? I have 4GB and 250GB on my MBP, not sure if I'll need more on the Air.

My colleague who uses Photoshop and Adobe stuff a fair bit is planning on an Air, reckons the graphics card on the Air should suffice, so I'll probably get the Air rather than the Retina!

I am still running the 2010 13" Air, core 2 duo with 128gb ssd and 4gb ram. I use it with Photoshop, Aperture, Traktor, Serato and Ableton, and it runs it no problems at all.
Takes around 3 mins to comvert a 2 hour set from MP3 to wav (ableton converts everything to wav and stores it in its cache). I am sure a 2012 Air would help to reduce this, but never really a problem.
My only issue, and one of the reasons I am considering an upgrade is I need more space, I have got 80gig of music on my Air that I want to keep on it and so my free space is now at under 10gig, so becoming a problem.
But I am more than happy with the Air. Had a 2.3 i5 Pro before and the air feels quicker day to day, probably because of the SSD drive. I would not own another machine without an SSD now. I was considering a 13" pro whacking in a 256gb SSD and relocating the 500gb 5400 drive in the superdrive bay as a time machine back up, but would really miss the overall feel of the Air now.

I guess storage could be an issue. I managed to use 250GB for 4yrs with 80GB to spare. Debating if I can make do with the 256GB on the Air or upgrade to 512GB—that's the killer.

I always end up with tons & tons of music on my drive ... so will re-invest in the new Pro when they do their next upgrade, hoping flash drive becomes standard.
Otherwise may plump up on Black Friday, hopefully my corporate discount works on top.

But it will probably be a dedicated SSD like on the Retina Pro, and expensive to upgrade.
OWC have said October for the retina SSD and $700 for the 400gig version.
I have been thinking about this more, and see I can get a 480gig 2.5 SSD drive for £259 and an adapter to replace the Superdrive for £30.
So £1260 for a 13" pro with 480gb SSD. Although my daughter starts Uni in September so could get 15% off if I got through the student store, plus applecare is only £49 then as well.
Plus the Pro is far more upgradeable, up to 16gb ram, in 24 months when 750gb SSD drives are £250 more space etc.
If I sell my 2010 13" Air with 4gb and 128gb ssd I will get £450-500, and a new 2012 13 air with 256gb will cost me £1250. I may as well buy the 13" pro for £999, and keep the Air. I will charge my company for the 480gb SSD.

The only reason to pick a Retina over the Pro is the retina display isn't it? If I were to pick a Pro, I too would replace the dvd drive with an SSD and keep the onboard HDD as secondary data storage.
