The price of computer games

I distinctly remeber in the early 90's that all new games for the Mega Drive or the SNES were always £39.99 when released, which seemed a fortune then.

Yet today, £39.99 seems to be the price for the latest games - which are longer and better.

Is there a reason for this or is it simply immune to inflation rises??

More competition. I remember working my ass off for three months so I could by Battletoads on the NES for 60$. In the early 90's. It was a fortune to me at the time.

Re: The price of computer games

I can't remember what edition, it was when I was living with my dad; however Game Informer (the stupid Gamestop magazine) did an article on why games cost so much. Oddly, the question was from the standpoint of they are too expensive rather than yours of why didn't they increase. If I had to guess, the price of games Nintendo til now has finally reached the perfect harmony.

If my guess was correct, then according to economics we were getting ass raped for games prior to now due to the amount of time spent creating them.

If my guess is incorrect then it boils down to although games back in the day were shorter, had worse graphics and all that, they still take the exact same time to create just technology affords us the ability to make them better in the same time.

Take it how you will. I personally think it's a combination of the 2.

Re: The price of computer games

Its funny how back then $50 for a game felt like a pile of money. Now I don't think its much and actually find it a bargain when I can get it for under 50.
