Ipad 1 - 32gig - 3g + wifi
$400.
Based on the specs and price, can someone in the US tell me if this is a good deal? It's barely used, a friend of mine is selling it.

Re: Ipad
from a very quick search of craig ;) 350-400 seems like the range around these parts
Re: Ipad
same here. thank ye
Re: Ipad
You can get the same one directly from apple at the same price. http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC496LL/A
I'd get the 2nd version if i could... is 3G necessary?
Re: Ipad
^thanks, I'm going to pass on the $400 ipad 1. I'll get the ipad 2 if I get one, 32gig wireless probably not 3g.
I'll get the ipad 2 if I get one, 32gig wireless
thats the one i have in white, love it :) TONS of awesome cases for it too..
then again.. i suppose iPad 3 will be out next year, don't need to wait too long..
Re: Ipad
Get 3g. You don't have to get the plan if u don't want to but the ability to spend $20 and use data when you need it is priceless. I regret not getting it.

That's a really good point, thanks.
Re: Ipad
Personally I don't see the point of 3G. I'd only need internet when near WiFi. Smart phones are for '3G scenarios'
Re: Ipad
The wifey and myself drive a lot. It's useful to have if you're bored being a passenger and want to catch up on some news, maybe youtube, it's worth it. Or if you're on holiday, go hang out on the beach or by the pool, just good to have so many features available on the ipad.
Granted your smartphone can do just as much as the iPad but if you're getting one anyways, you'd might as well get something that's going to make it more usable. I'd rather downgrade on the size, I ended up with the 64 GB thinking I'd upload a bunch of movies so we can enjoy them when we fly (which I do insane amounts of these days), and I haven't converted / uploaded even ONE movie (music's out of the question).
So yes, get 3G, you can even use internationally.

We're getting one, and doing the same ...downgrade size, but get 3G. With all the cloud computing services, notably icloud, HD space on portable devices isn't going to be a big deal anymore, but i'm going to want to be able to access that data everywhere, ie- 3G.
Re: Ipad
Retina Scanning & ControlThe one thing about the new IPad that will freak people out is one of the functions of the forward-facing camera and that's the ability to do retina scans. What does this mean? Well, on a very basic level, it means that only a single user can access any IPad if that user sets up the retina scan feature. Turning the IPad on will require the proper retina. The even bigger thing though, in my opinion, is the retina control feature. This feature allows the user to control a virtual mouse or virtual finger with the user's eye. In other words, users will be able to use the IPad without actually touching the IPad. Basically, wherever you look on the IPad screen, the camera will recognize through the use of constant retina scanning. And just like clicking a mouse, one blink will control some functions while two blinks will control other functions. I've used it and it works amazingly well and is completely intuitive.
Re: Ipad
Did you guys buy a USB adapter? I'm debating between 16gb and 64gb still.
Re: Ipad
USB Adapter? The HDMI one? No I didn't get it. There's NOTHING on the iPad that I don't get via a PC connected to a computer that would make me want to stand next to the TV with the iPad plugged in and get something displayed on the big-screen. EVEN Angry Birds
Don't debate, just go 16gb and save your money. Unless you are extremely motivated, you WONT get around to churning out remuxed copies of your mkvs flix to store on your ipad and you defo wont end up using it as an ipod.

I meant for using it to upload movies, etc... so that there was a USB port, for photos, etc. But you and Jenks have both convinced me to stick with 16gb. Thanks
Re: Ipad
If its for your TV and not to use it in others i'd get the AppleTV. You can use mirroring on your ipad and forget about the cables. Its 99$ i believe. Also getting the 3G is unnessesary, you got an iPhone right? tether your connection then :D.
Kamal, international 3G rates are INSANE. You dont wanna use it abroad. There was a story of one guy that got a 10k bill for downloading like 10gb abroad lol
Re: Ipad
no, no interest in using an ipad with my tv... thats what my macbook is for, works great in that regard  I just thought a usb port would come in handy is all.
Re: Ipad
Yea you can tether if your carrier will allow it, ATT will spank yo ass for trying. As for international rates, yea I agree its going to be expensive but if you download 10gb, you deserve to get whipped. I was referring to more cautious usage such as if you're lost touring a city and need to download a bit of the map in your area or find a restaurant / bar / sight seeing etc.

sprint family plan baby :)
Re: Ipad
So did you get one mate?
I've decided to hold off until the 3 comes out :D
Re: Ipad
I've decided I will be on the internet too much with one  ... If anything my family has enough computers I've decided. I would like something electronic to carry around to use for storing scripts, and to use as the occasional teleprompter for auditions, but I don't need an ipad for just that .
Re: Ipad
^^^ lol true that.

Since Nov I've held out on buying and now of course it makes total sense to wait until March when the iad 3 comes out to buy the ipad 2. I wonder what new features the ipad 3 will have though.
Re: Ipad
I was thinking about holding out until the iPad 3 as well and then I got the 2 for my birthday which was a pleasant surprise... now I hear that the 3 will be slightly thicker in size??? Not sure if I'd like that, I'm content with the 2 for now... but time will tell...lol
Re: Ipad
I have been trying to talk myself into buying a tablet for a while but i cant quite take the plunge. I cant see any advantage over a laptop as i would only use it round the house mostly, do you guys use them for trips/business or just like a new toy :)
Re: Ipad
^I have a couple uses that will make it worth owning for business. If it were just for personal use and no practical work use, I wouldn't buy one I since we already have a macbook and a pro...
Re: Ipad
I would be lying if I said that I don't enjoy new toys... but this baby travels with me everywhere I go.... its not just a toy IMHO :)
Re: Ipad
That is the main reason I got an iPad was for trips and the like. Most airports and hotels offer free wifi nowadays so I didn't feel the need to go the 3G route.
I must admit, it is nice being able to check the news and MS whike lounging or laying in bed with it being so light.
As far as the new iPad, I heard rumors last year that the only big difference will be the utilization of HD video and higher retina display resolutions as a result.
If you are thinking about purchasing a new Apple product, highly recommend checking macrumors.com beforehand to kind of gauge what may be released in the pipeline.

I picked up a second hand, baely used iPad 1 about 6 months ago from a friend. I was drunk at the time and probably would not have purchased it, but it was a good deal.
Anyway, it does have it's uses but I could live without it. It's very handy to surf the net on, as you can simply turn it on and you are instantly on the web - no waiting for a laptop to load etc. I know that seems trivial but sometimes I just cant be bothered to log on, log off etc.
I did install football manager on it, which has received some heavy use, so thats been good. I have also watched a few films on it which looked and sounded great. The real benefit for me will be the next time I travel anywhere long distance - the 10 hour battery life is a real bonus - I get so bored and nervous on planes.
I have seen the iPad 2 and it is obviously better than the 1.
I would say get one if you can afford it and you will use it!

I intend to make a baby at some point and it would be nice to have something that the kid would be able to watch movies on that doesn't require me to lug around a giant diaper bag with 100 million kids DVD's or blurays in it.
At the same time getting an iPad 2 or 3 for myself to screw around on would be nice, then when I make said baby it'll be old enough that I won't get sick if it gets mildly destroyed.

then don't go apple, there aren't any free softwares available that will play mkvs and even the ones that are paid aren't easy to muck around with. apple really wants to control the ios ecosystem to ensure they milk you for all that they can. if movies is your thing, go android (galaxy tab or the transformer prime), they will play mkvs out of the box (at least the transformer does and so does my note) and you just need to find a site to get decent micro-hd mkvs and you're good to go.
another huge advantage is you can also download directly to your android device. good luck trying that with apple.
with apple, it'd be download to pc, convert to manageable size and compatible format, load in itunes, copy to ipad and then play. for every file you have, repeat process. with an android tablet, load browser in tablet, download link, save, enjoy.
there's just so many reasons to love android (and all the right ones at that).
Re: Ipad
Have you got an android tablet Kamal? Which have you got? I was thinking about getting a galaxy tab 10.1 (decision has been made at last) but i want something with a lot of development to go along with it.
Re: Ipad
not me personally but I bought the Asus Transformer Prime (the quad core CPU one since there are a few flavors of the Transformer running around) as a gift for my brother. I played with it for a couple of weeks before I gave it to him. It came with GB and I upgraded it to ICS. The transformation in performance was night and day.
In comparison to my iPad2, it was slightly heavier and bulkier, but it has an IPS display, great camera, good battery life. Asus needed to release a few patches initially to make sure it worked well with ICS but afaik those were for the GPS. But it did make other improvements as well (screen quality and audio) and I must admit it's a pretty good device.
It's just that the Android app market still has a way to go for tablets.
