NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned and will be replaced by former Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, the company said late Wednesday. Jobs will stay on as Apple's chairman. Apple made no mention of Jobs' health in its statement about the change, but Jobs alluded to it in the letter of resignation he sent to Apple's board on Wednesday and later released publicly.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," wrote Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January. Cook has been filling in as the company's leader.
Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) board took pains to praise Jobs, who lead a historic turnaround for the once-ailing company. "Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," board member Art Levinson said. "In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration." In January, Jobs said he would take another medical leave of absence, two years after a six-month sabbatical during which he received a liver transplant. This is a 15-minute video of Steve giving a commencement speech to Stanford graduates in 2005. I have some new respect for the guy after watching it. It's a great watch and I recommend everyone watch it if you have the time to kill

Re: Steve Jobs Resigns from Apple

Ya I love how he treats his workers in China like slaves. So much to the point that the apple employees in China have the highest suicide rate.. It was so bad they had to put up nets so people would stop jumping off the building.

Thanks for posting this RM. I had no idea. This article needs to be mailed to every apple computer owner on the planet. This is unconscionable.

I don't know much about "The Daily Mail." Is it reliable?

Re: Steve Jobs Resigns from Apple

It's hard to say. Is anything reliable? That is my biggest problem.

Forbes wrote about it as well.

http://www.forbes.com/2010/05/28/foxconn-apple-suicides-china-opinions-columnists-gordon-g-chang.html But how reliable is Forbes.. You see since I don't trust anyone it is hard to say.

and Reuters.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/05/26/foxconn-apple-idUSHKU00233720100526

They make 900 Yuan a month ($141). Work 60 hours a week. Some tie up their kids to a pole and make them wait all day while their parents go to work to try to make enough to feed them. It's pretty fucked.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/may/27/foxconn-suicide-tenth-iphone-china

So much for the Buddhist Environmental Humanist Steve Jobs. If you read the Guardian article their attitude is all wrong. They are trying to literally stop people from killing themselves rather than fixing the obvious which is paying them more to give them a better quality of life.

Re: Steve Jobs Resigns from Apple

This made the rounds on the Chinese internet as well. But I don't believe Foxconn manufactures solely for Apple. And in the context of China where all kinds of atrocities and nonsense happen, where life of any kind is not only cheap but discounted for, this is not even ... special. :(

It appears as though Apple spent a lot of money covering the suicides up, that actually is special. I think if more people knew about this story they would be less inclined to buy from Apple. That's just my opinion.

I don't care how many sweaty little malnourished 10 year old chinese kids it takes to build my new iphone5-- just put it together correctly and get it in my hands STAT! I'm ready for an upgrade!
